The project investigates molecular pathways related to TGF-beta in the context of the progression of interstitial lung abnormalities to either emphysema or pulmonary fibrosis. Biogen is developing an antibody for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis that may selectively block the TFG-beta pathway. Dr. Washko's spouse is a salaried employee of Biogen with stock.
Distinct and Overlapping Pathways of Fibrosis and Emphysema in Cigarette Smokers
The pathogenesis of COPD and IPF is poorly understood. In this program project we have integrated the expertise of investigators from COPD and IPF community, both basic and translational, to come together to better understand the pathogenesis of these chronic lung diseases, and hopefully identify new molecular targets in the treatment of these dreadful diseases in the future.
