Issue:

A Veteran, who is currently hospitalized on 3N, stated he overheard his provider discussing his HIV diagnosis with another employee in the hallway. The Privacy Officer (PO) will enter this ticket as a complaint. If the allegation is substantiated, PO will escalate the ticket to an incident.

Outcome:

05/18/15: The Provider discussed the lab results with the Veteran from the doorway of the Veteran's room. The Veteran stated the individual in the room next to his heard the discussion. The Provider admitted he discussed the lab results from the doorway but did not mention the diagnosis. Upon the Veteran's request, the Provider stepped inside the room to finish the discussion. No one else was in the room with the Veteran. It has not been substantiated that the person next door actually heard the conversation. The PO was not able to question the patient in the next room. Patient A will be sent a letter of notification.
