Issue:
Based on documentation and interview, hospital staff failed to implement a patient's right to privacy by discussing medical information without consent to a patient with a visitor present.Findings:In an interview on 8/9/12, the privacy officer stated on 4/25/12 she received a possible privacy breach from the hospital's guest services department regarding Patient 1 and a physician.An investigation was conducted which revealed that Patient 1 was admitted to the hospital on 4/24/12. During the course of her care on 4/25/12, she was visited by a friend and Physician A. Physician A began discussing the patient's use of medications in front of her friend and referenced a diagnosis for one of the medications. Patient 1 did not want the diagnosis released.
