Issue:

Based on interview the hospital failed to protect the right for confidential medical treatment for one of one sampled patient (1). Findings:Patient 1 was admitted to the hospital on 3/24/12 for septic thrombophlebitis (skin condition that results in tender, swollen extremities with or without redness). Patient 2 was admitted to the hospital on 3/24/12 for pneumonia. On 6/29/12 at 1:15 p.m. during an interview with the hospital's privacy officer, she stated Patient 1's daughter called the hospital and stated her father received someone else's prescription. After an internal investigation, the hospital identified that MD 1 had inadvertently given Patient 1 a prescription intended for Patient 2. Both Patient 1 and Patient 2 were discharged on the same day, had the same medication prescription and were MD 1's patients. The prescription handed to Patient 1 disclosed Patient 2's name and medication being prescribed.
