Issue:

A VA employee sent an un-encrypted email message containing a screen shot of the full Social Security number and name of one of VA Providers to VetPro Help Desk e-mail group. The email group is outside of VA network. The mail group is comprised of 10 VA staff and one non-VA staff (NIH system admin). The VA employee does have valid PKI certificates assigned. The responsible Information Security Officer (ISO) will be notified via Remedy Ticket and email. Update: 12/21/11:One Individual will be sent letters offering credit protection services.

Outcome:

Per supervisor, employee re-trained on use of PKI when sending documents containing PII outside of the VA.
