Issue:

An Atlanta VAMC employee who is a patient at the Augusta VAMC reported to the Augusta Privacy Officer (PO) that a co-worker inappropriately accessed her medical record without authorization after they had an altercation in the workplace. Augusta PO was requested to review access logs. The log confirmed that the co-worker and two other Atlanta VAMC employees had accessed the record. Upon transferring the incident to Atlanta PO all employees were interviewed. Two employees had accessed the record in the performance of their job functions, one (co-worker) had inappropriately accessed the record without a need to know. Update: 10/30/12:One employee will be sent a letter offering credit protection services.

Outcome:

Staff has been retrained and required to retake the Privacy trng. Supervisor will evaluate for disciplinary action.
