Issue:
The Nurse Manager, MICU (Nashville Campus), reported the following incident to the Privacy Officer (Nashville Campus): Today, an Attending Provider, Pulmonary, invited a Vanderbilt medical student to round with him in MICU. The medical student, who is the son of an RN, MICU, is not a part of the medical team and has not been vetted through Education Service. Additionally, written permission was not obtained from the Providers patients for the student to observe. The team rounded on seven (7) patients. Protected Health Information (PHI) discussed includes: name, diagnosis, and medications.
Outcome:
05/22/13: Seven patients will be sent a letter of notificaiton. 06/10/13: This was determined to be HITECH reportable by VHA Privacy Office.
