Issue:
Based on telephone interview, the hospital failed to ensure that 1 of 1 sampled patient's (1) medical information was kept confidential from anyone not authorized access. Patient 1's medical information was inadvertently given to another patient without authorization which impeded on Patient 1's right to confidentiality.Findings:A telephone interview with the hospital's privacy officer (PO) was conducted on 3/4/14 at 2:00 P.M. According to the PO, Patient 1's x-ray film was inadvertently given to another patient by radiology technician (RT) 1. The PO stated that RT 1 stated that, prior to handing the x-ray film to the other patient, RT 1 did not check the x-ray film to ensure that he was giving the film to the right patient. The PO acknowledged that RT 1 should have ensure that the x-ray film was given to the right patient. According to the PO, the x-ray film indicated Patient 1's name, date of birth, medical record number, and the date of service.
