Issue:
A foreign podiatry student asked to visit VA Medical Center and observe. The student has not taken any privacy/information security awareness training and has no affiliation with VA. The student "shadowed" a podiatry resident for a "few hours" and was injured while observing a procedure. Update: 04/19/11:The student received permission from the Chief of Podiatry to observe for the day, however did not go through appropriate channels (i.e. the school, education department, etc...) to receive permission to observe for the day. The student did not access any written or electronic medical records. The student observed one patients procedure.04/20/11:One Veteran will receive a letter of notification.
Outcome:
Staff has been re-educated on privacy. Individual re-took Privacy training. Stronger identification procedures are in place in the clinic to identify visitors from staff. Visitor policy is being revised.
