Issue:

Based on interview and record review, the hospital failed to protect the right for confidential medical treatment for one of one sampled patient (1). Findings:Patient 1 received services at the hospital from 6/6/11 to 6/9/11.On 6/22/12 at 11:45 a.m. during an interview with the hospital's privacy officer, she stated Patient 1 had notified the hospital that one of the hospital's billing representatives had provided Patient 1's daughter information regarding his hospital bill without his consent. After an internal investigation the hospital confirmed that one of the billing representatives had contacted Patient 1's daughter because she needed additional insurance information for Patient 1. Patient 1's daughter requested a copy of her father's medical bill which was provided by the billing representative through an e-mail. On 6/22/12 at 11:50 a.m. a review of the information provided to Patient 1's daughter was conducted. The information disclosed Patient 1's name, account number, hospital charges, and insurance information.
