Issue:

The Chief of MAS was walking through the clinic area and saw a clinical staff member (Tech) leaning over the clerk counter and talking to a Veteran who was standing in the waiting room area. The technician was speaking to the Veteran about his care and specifically talking about his conditions such as "prostate" and following up the doctor will probably be doing. The Chief, MAS noted the waiting room was full of other Veterans/family who could all overhear this conversation. Update: 04/20/12:The Privacy Officer (PO) spoke to the Surgery Nurse Supervisor about this incident today. He stated he would be providing education/awareness to employee as well as other staff in that clinic. PO informed him also the PO would reccommend the employee retake the Privacy and HIPAA 2012 Training and to provide a signed certificate. The Veteran will receive a letter of notification.

Outcome:

PO requested employee retake Privacy & HIPAA Training 2012 and submit signed certificate by 5-2-2012. PO sent report to Supervisor and HR for potential further action.
