As ourGoodwheels program prepares to sunset, we still connected 16 recipientsthis year with low interest loans to secure reliable transportation and1,392 over the program life.Community Services: Our AmeriCorps programs connect 152 AmeriCorps members with 53 non-profits to help build their organizational capacity by strengthening their volunteer programs, rural student success and the capacity of first responders at volunteer fire departments throughout our region. In addition to its Residential, Brain Injury, Workforce Development, Community Integration and Retail Programs, Goodwill Industries of Northern New England invests in the communities it serves. Here are a few examples:Good Neighbor Voucher Program: Last year, in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, we provided 18,973 Goodwill shopping vouchers ($10 each) to people in crisis. Working with partner agencies to augment their services, and directly with individuals in crisis after fire, domestic violence, relocation or other disruption to their personal stability, Good Neighbor vouchers enable people to purchase clothing or household items that meet their needs.Community Policing Center: Goodwill provides space to the Portland's Police Department for its Midtown Community Policing Center. This is provided at no charge as Goodwill knows that strong neighborhoods require partnerships and collaboration to enhance the overall health of a community.Partnerships with School Departments: Whether through employment mentoring days or student tours within its retail stores, Goodwill supports students and teachers to help youth better understand the world of employment and their future careers.Sales Tax: Last year, Goodwill generated $1,293,726 in sales tax in Maine, and $116,790 in Vermont. Additionally, Goodwill also paid $517,624 in Maine Service Provider tax.Real Estate Taxes: In 2012, Goodwill paid over $235,000 in real estate taxes through lease agreements in Maine. In New Hampshire, this total was over $167,000 and in Vermont, $69,500.Disability Outreach and Education: Through journal articles, public speaking events or direct advocacy work, Goodwill staff is constantly working to educate the community and other specific stakeholders about the issues faced by people with disabilities. It is a part of Goodwill's history and central to its values.English as a Second Language (ESL): Diversity in the workforce makes Goodwill and our community vibrant. As such, Goodwill offers ESL classes. Community Donations: The generosity of the residents within the communities Goodwill serves is vital to the success of Goodwill's retail stores. Additionally, because of these donations, millions of pounds of waste are diverted from our municipalities' landfills each year. These items include computers, televisions, cookware, clothing and more. Job Connection Center: In 2013, Goodwill established its first co-located retail/job center in Lewiston, Maine. This center allows the residents of Lewiston - and beyond - access to employment counseling, job connections and on-line job applications at no cost.Chamber of Commerce: To date, Goodwill is a dues paying member of the following Chambers of Commerce: Androscoggin Chamber of Commerce, Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, Maine State Chamber of Commerce, Mid-Maine Chamber of Commerce, Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce, Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, Sebago Lake Chamber of Commerce, Southern Mid Coast Maine Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce.
