EMERGENCY GRANTS HURRICANE SANDY-UWNYC FUNDING - IN RESPONSE TO THE EMERGENCY NEEDS OF NEW YORK CITY NONPROFITS AND RESIDENTS DEVASTATED BY HURRICANE SANDY, UWNYC AWARDED EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE GRANTS TOTALING $100,000 TO 12 ORGANIZATIONS, RANGING FROM $3,300 TO $10,000. THE FUNDS WERE ALLOCATED TO REBUILD FACILITIES, REPLACE DAMAGED AND DESTROYED IT EQUIPMENT, RENT TEMPORARY SPACE, RELOCATE TEMPORARILY, REPLENISH DAMAGED SUPPLIES, COVER TRANSPORTATION TO ALTERNATE SITES, AND REPLACE PROGRAM MATERIALS. HURRICANE SANDY RECOVERY FUND (HSRF) - IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE HURRICANE HIT NYC, UNITED WAY U.S.A. ASKED UWNYC TO MANAGE A HURRICANE SANDY RECOVERY FUND (HSRF) AND TO LEAD THE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS FOR THAT FUND. UWNYC SERVED AS THE FUND MANAGER FOR HSRF AND ENSURED THAT ALL FUNDS WERE USED EFFICIENTLY AND EFFECTIVELY TO SERVE THOSE IN NEED. CONTRIBUTIONS TO HSRF WERE USED BY LOCAL UNITED WAYS ALONG THE EASTERN SEABOARD TO ADDRESS THE NEAR AND LONG TERM RECOVERY NEEDS OF COMMUNITIES MOST AFFECTED BY THE HURRICANE, INCLUDING BOLSTERING UNITED WAY'S COMMUNITY BASED PARTNERS THAT SERVE HURRICANE AFFECTED INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES WHO WERE ALREADY VULNERABLE AND EXPERIENCING CHALLENGES IN MEETING THEIR MOST BASIC NEEDS HSRF WAS INTENDED TO COMPLEMENT THE WORK OF NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS THAT WERE STRUGGLING TO ADDRESS THE EMERGENCY ISSUES FACING THEIR COMMUNITIES BY MEETING UNMET NEEDS THAT WERE NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE OR OTHER GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS. THE FORMULA UTILIZED BY UWNYC TO DETERMINE THE DISTRIBUTION OF HSRF DOLLARS TAKES INTO CONSIDERATION THREE FACTORS - POPULATION IMPACT, ACTUAL IMPACT, AND ABILITY TO RESPOND - EQUALLY WEIGHTED TO DETERMINE THE FINAL SHARE OF THE FUNDING THAT EACH COUNTY WILL RECEIVE. TO DATE, JUST OVER $10.7 MILLION HAS BEEN RAISED FOR HSRF AND DISTRIBUTED IN THREE PHASES. THE NEW YORK CITY ALLOCATION OF THE OVERALL FUNDS RAISED FOR ALL THREE PHASES TOTALED $3,461,248.91. NYC FUNDING HAS BEEN DISBURSED IN SOME OF THE HARDEST HIT COMMUNITIES INCLUDING CONEY ISLAND, STATEN ISLAND, THE LOWER EASTSIDE, AND THE ROCKAWAYS. |

PARTNERED WITH NYCDOE DESIGNATED SCHOOLS TO PROVIDE SERVICES TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES. GRADUATE PREPARE SUCCEED (GPS-NYC)-IN 2010, UWNYC LAUNCHED ITS SIGNATURE PROGRAM, GRADUATE, PREPARE, SUCCEED (GPS-NYC), WHICH BUILDS ON OUR 20 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH THE COMMUNITY ACHIEVEMENT PROJECT IN THE SCHOOLS (CAPS) PROGRAM AND INCORPORATES A MORE HOLISTIC APPROACH, SPECIFICALLY TARGETING 9TH GRADE STUDENTS ENTERING HIGH SCHOOL WITH A HISTORY OF CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM. UNITED WAY OF NYC BRING TOGETHER COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS (CBOS) AND NYCDOE PUBLIC SCHOOLS WITH A FOCUS ON ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAMS IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL AIDP SERVICES, COUNSELING, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT, AND ATTENDANCE IMPROVEMENT SERVICES, GPS-NYC IS DESIGNED TO HELP STUDENTS RECONNECT WITH SCHOOL, ATTAIN ACADEMIC SUCCESS, AND GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL. ALTERNATE LEARNING CENTERS (ALCS)-IN ADDITION TO OUR GPS-NYC PROGRAM, UWNYC PARTNERS WITH CBOS TO PROVIDE AIDP SERVICES AT EIGHT ALC SITES. THESE SERVICES ARE OFFERED TO STUDENTS WHO ARE ON SUSPENSION AND FOCUS ON REDUCING RECIDIVISM. THIS INTERVENTION IS TEMPORARY AND SERVICES CAN RANGE FROM 1-90 DAYS. MIDDLE SCHOOL INITIATIVE - THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMIC INITIATIVE (MSAI) IS AN AIDP PROGRAM THAT SUPPORTS TWO COHORTS OF 115 STUDENTS IN TWO MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO IMPROVE STUDENT ATTENDANCE. STUDENTS IN THIS PROGRAM ARE SUPPORTED WITH ATTENDANCE OUTREACH, COUNSELING, AND FAMILY INVOLVEMENT. IN ADDITION 25 STUDENTS FROM EACH SCHOOL PARTICIPATE IN AN ACADEMIC AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT PROGRAM THAT FOCUSES IN ENGLISH AND MATH. THE GOAL OF THE ACADEMIC COMPONENT IS TO HELP 7TH AND 8TH GRADE STUDENTS ACHIEVE ACADEMIC STANDARDS FOR GRADUATION AND PREPARE THEM FOR THEIR TRANSITION INTO HIGH SCHOOL. TRANSFER SCHOOLS - AIDP PROGRAMS AT TRANSFER SCHOOLS AIM TO SUPPORT THE SUCCESSFUL TRANSITION AND PROMOTION OF STUDENTS ENTERING TRANSFER HIGH SCHOOLS AND IDENTIFIED AS AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT OF SCHOOL. OVER-AGE AND UNDER-CREDITED STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED TARGETED, COMPREHENSIVE SERVICES IN AN ACCELERATED TIMEFRAME. TRANSFER SCHOOLS ENROLL STUDENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY ATTENDED ANOTHER HIGH SCHOOL FOR A YEAR BUT HAVE NOT MADE SUFFICIENT PROGRESS TOWARDS GRADUATION. AIDP TRANSFER SCHOOLS' PARTNERS PROVIDE ACADEMIC SUPPORT, ATTENDANCE OUTREACH, COUNSELING AND FAMILY INVOLVEMENT SERVICES. DIPLOMAS NOW/GPS TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - UWNYC AND DIPLOMAS NOW COLLABORATED TO IMPLEMENT A PILOT PROGRAM IN 2012-2013 THAT MADE USE OF CRITICAL LESSONS LEARNED FROM PRE-EXISTING INITIATIVES AND CREATED AN INNOVATIVE PROGRAM MODEL THAT BUILT SCHOOL AND CBO CAPACITY TO DEVELOP COLLABORATIVE RELATIONSHIPS. AS PARTICIPANTS IN THE PILOT, CBO STAFF GAINED AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO BEST ENGAGE WITH SCHOOLS AND WHAT ACTIONS THEY CAN TAKE TO BE ACTIVE PARTNERS WITHIN THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL LEADERS LEARN THE IMPORTANCE OF AND INNOVATIVE APPROACHES TO PARTNERING WITH COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATION TO PROVIDE HOLISTIC SUPPORT TO ALL STUDENTS. FURTHERMORE, BOTH SCHOOL LEADERS AND CBO STAFF RECEIVED TRAINING IN THE USE OF DATA, DEVELOPING STRUCTURED INTERVENTIONS FOR STUDENTS AND CHANGING SCHOOL CULTURE; ALL FOCUSED ON BUILDING SCHOOL-COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS TO IMPROVE STUDENT OUTCOMES. COLLEGE READINESS ACADEMY - IN FY 2012-2013 UWNYC DEVELOPED A COLLEGE READINESS PILOT PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM FOCUSES PRIMARILY ON ACADEMIC PREPAREDNESS, BUT ALSO INCLUDES CAREER EXPOSURE, COLLEGE ACCESS AND EXPLORATION AND FINANCING STRATEGIES FOR HIGHER EDUCATION. CENTRAL TO THIS PILOT IS THE ROLE OF PROFESSIONAL VOLUNTEERS AND CORPORATE PARTNERSHIPS. IMPACT VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES WILL LEAD TO POSITIVE EXPOSURE TO HIGHER EDUCATION AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES. SUPPORTING TRANSITIONS FROM EARLY-EDUCATION TO PUBLIC SCHOOLS (STEPS) A PILOT INITIATIVE IN THE SOUTH BRONX, STEPS AIMS TO ENSURE THAT A CHILD'S LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENTAL NEEDS ARE SEAMLESSLY MET DURING THE FIRST EIGHT YEARS OF LIFE. THE INITIATIVE HELPS EDUCATORS, ADMINISTRATORS AND FAMILIES' BETTER SUPPORT CHILDREN'S SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL GROWTH THROUGH DEVELOPMENTALLY APPROPRIATE PRACTICES THAT FOSTER LIFELONG LEARNING. STEPS HAS FOUR COMPONENTS: ALIGNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACROSS THE EARLY CHILDHOOD AND PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEMS, EMPOWERING AND ENGAGING FAMILIES, IMPROVING COMMUNITY COORDINATION, AND CREATING SYSTEM-WIDE REFORMS. CHILD CARE AND EARLY EDUCATION FUND (CCEEF)-THIS FUND IS A COLLABORATIVE EFFORT COMPRISED OF PRIVATE FUNDERS AND PUBLIC SECTOR REPRESENTATIVES WHO ARE FOCUSED ON ACHIEVING SYSTEMIC IMPROVEMENTS IN THE QUANTITY, QUALITY, AND ACCESSIBILITY OF EARLY EDUCATION SERVICES THROUGH COLLABORATIVE GRANT MAKING. CCEEF INFORMS AND STRENGTHENS CITY/STATE POLICIES AND SYSTEMS REGARDING FUNDING, CONTRACTING, AND ASSESSMENT OF EARLY CARE AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS. IT ALSO WORKS TO ENHANCE QUALITY IMPROVEMENT MECHANISMS, WITH A FOCUS ON PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM MODELS, AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH APPROACHES. CAMPAIGN FOR GRADE LEVEL READING (CGLR) -IN FY 2012-2013, UWNYC LAUNCHED THE CAMPAIGN FOR GRADE LEVEL READING (CGLR) WITH A FOCUS ON DOUBLING THE NUMBER OF CHILDREN READING ON GRADE LEVEL BY THIRD GRADE IN FIVE LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS BY 2020. CGLR IS A COMPREHENSIVE, ALIGNED, AND COLLECTIVE APPROACH TO SUPPORTING CHILDREN, FAMILIES, AND COMMUNITIES WITH RESOURCES TO BUILD AND SUSTAIN A CULTURE OF LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT, CAPTURED IN THE PROOF POINT OF STUDENT SUCCESS IN GRADE THREE. CGLR WILL INITIALLY FOCUS ON TEN NEIGHBORHOODS OF CONCENTRATED POVERTY ACROSS NEW YORK CITY'S FIVE BOROUGHS TO COHERENTLY ADDRESS THE BREADTH OF COMPETING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY BARRIERS TO BUILDING AND SUSTAINING A CULTURE OF LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT. UWNYC'S APPROACH WILL SUPPORT THE SEAMLESS CONTINUUM OF EDUCATION IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN THE HOME THAT IS BACKED BY EVIDENCE-BASED RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE. IT WILL MOBILIZE RESOURCES TO IMPROVE EDUCATION AND HEALTH OUTCOMES FOR CHILDREN, AND KEY FINANCIAL SUPPORTS FOR FAMILIES. LOCAL COMMUNITY COORDINATION GRANTS - EAST SIDE HOUSE-SUMMER ACTIVITIES GRANT: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO EAST SIDE HOUSE (ESH) TO CONDUCT COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES IN THE MOTT HAVEN SECTION OF THE BRONX; BUILT OFF OF THE WORK OF THE STEPS INITIATIVE IN THAT AREA. THESE OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES INCLUDED WORKSHOPS FOR FAMILIES AND INFORMATION SHARING ON THE IMPORTANCE OF SCHOOL READINESS, PREPARING FOR PRE-KINDERGARTEN, AND THE BEST PRACTICES FOR TRANSITIONING A CHILD INTO KINDERGARTEN. ADELAIDE SANFORD INSTITUTE GRANT: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO THE ADELAIDE SANFORD INSTITUTE TO ENHANCE INFORMATION ACCESS AND UTILIZATION FOR RESIDENTS IN CENTRAL BROOKLYN. THIS SUPPORT HELPED TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE IMPACT OF EDUCATION REFORM POLICIES AND HELPED TO INFLUENCE SYSTEMIC CHANGES THAT WILL ENHANCE STUDENTS' AND FAMILIES' OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCCESS. SCHUYLER CENTER WINNING BEGINNINGS GRANT: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO SUPPORT THE SCHUYLER CENTER'S WORK TO INFLUENCE AND INFORM STATE AND CITY EARLY EDUCATION POLICY OBJECTIVES THAT WILL HELP TO ENSURE QUALITY EARLY-LEARNING PROGRAMS, HEALTHIER CHILDREN, AND STRONGER FAMILIES. ADDITIONALLY, SUPPORT TO THE SCHUYLER CENTER HELPED TO IDENTIFY BEST PRACTICES IN EARLY EDUCATION THAT COULD THEN BE REPLICATED AND IMPLEMENTED THROUGHOUT OTHER STATE AND CITY EARLY LEARNING INITIATIVES, INCLUDING UWNYC'S CAMPAIGN FOR GRADE LEVEL READING (CGLR) INITIATIVE. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, ADVOCACY & POLICY - CHILDREN'S DEFENSE FUND (CDF) GRANT: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO THE CHILDREN'S DEFENSE FUND-NEW YORK (CDF) TO SUPPORT A NEW YORK CITY DELEGATION OF CHILD ADVOCATES TO ATTEND THE NATIONAL CDF CONFERENCE "PURSUING JUSTICE FOR CHILDREN AND THE POOR-WITH URGENCY AND PERSISTENCE", A YOUTH EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE. CENTER FOR CHILDREN'S INITIATIVES: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO THE CENTER FOR CHILDREN'S INITIATIVES TO SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS TO STRENGTHEN NYC'S CHILDCARE AND EARLY EDUCATION ADVOCACY WORK. PHILANTHROPY NEW YORK GRANT: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO PHILANTHROPY NY TO PRODUCE AND DISSEMINATE A SERIES OF WHITE PAPERS THAT ASSESS THE IMPACT OF EDUCATION REFORM STRATEGIES, TO BUILD A BROADER PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE ABOUT KEY CITY AND STATE LEVEL EDUCATION ISSUES, AND TO IMPROVE COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS AMONGST KEY STAKEHOLDERS SUCH AS GOVERNMENT AND COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVES. CITIZENS COMMITTEE FOR CHILDREN GRANT: UWNYC ISSUED A GRANT TO THE CITIZENS COMMITTEE FOR CHILDREN (CCC) TO SUPPORT THEIR EFFORTS TO INFORM THE NEW MAYORAL CAMPAIGN AND ENSURE THAT THE NEW ADMINISTRATION PRIORITIZE ITS EFFORTS AROUND EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND OUTCOMES.
