BIRTHMATTERS: THE POWER OF BEING YOUNG - BIRTHMATTERS AND THE LEAGUE HOSTED A BACK-TO-SCHOOL EVENT FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY. THE YOUTH SUMMIT ENTITLED "THE POWER OF BEING YOUNG" INVOLVED STUDENTS RECEIVING BOTH INDIVIDUAL GENDER AND CO-ED EDUCATION ON TOPICS SUCH AS BULLYING AND DECISION-MAKING. BOTH OF WHICH CAN FACTOR HEAVILY INTO A STUDENT'S SUCCESS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. APPROXIMATELY 60 STUDENTS ATTENDED THE YOUTH SUMMIT. |

UPSTATE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER - THE UPSTATE FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER'S MISSION IS TO HELP FAMILIES THRIVE BY PROVIDING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES, ENGAGING ACTIVITIES, AND SUPPORT SERVICES. THE URFC PROVIDES ASSISTANCE FOR TEEN MOTHERS IN SPARTANBURG SCHOOL DISTRICT 2 AS MANY CITIZENS IN THIS COMMUNITY CANNOT CONSISTENTLY DRIVE THE 15 MILES TO THE CITY OF SPARTANBURG FOR ASSISTANCE. THE LEAGUE ASSISTED THE MISSIONS OF THE UFRC BY PROVIDING TWO FAMILY FORUM DINNERS GEARED TOWARD ENCOURAGING THE TEEN MOMS TO CONTINUE WITH THEIR EDUCATION WHILE ALSO TAKING PROPER CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN AND THEMSELVES. AT THE DECEMBER EVENT, THE TEEN MOTHERS LEARNED ABOUT POST-HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY AND SOURCES OF FUNDING SO THEY MAY CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION. APPROXIMATELY 12 TEEN MOMS ALONG WITH THEIR PARTNERS AND FAMILIES WERE SERVED. |

HUB CITY FARMERS' MARKET - THE HUB CITY FARMERS' MARKET IS A MARKET HELD EVERY SATURDAY FROM THE SPRING THOUGH NOVEMBER/DECEMBER AT THE NORTHSIDE HARVEST PARK IN SPARTANBURG. THE MARKET PROVIDES FRESH, LOCAL, SEASONAL GOODS. THE MARKET IS "PRODUCER ONLY" MEANING THAT EVERYTHING SOLD IS GROWN OR PRODUCED BY THE VENDOR SELLING IT. THE LEAGUE PARTNERED WITH THE MARKET TO ESTABLISH A MONTHLY TENT AT WHICH KID-FRIENDLY RECIPES AND SNACKS WERE AVAILABLE. THIS COINCIDES WITH JLS'S KIDS IN THE KITCHEN INITIATIVE. JLS PROVIDES A HEALTHY SNACK AND EXPLAINS THE NUTRITION BEHIND IT AND THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO PRACTICE HEALTHY EATING HABITS AT HOME. IN ADDITION TO PROVIDING A HEALTHY TREAT, A RECIPE CARD IS PROVIDED SO THE SNACK CAN BE REPLICATED AT HOME. THE LEAGUE ALSO CONTRIBUTED 4,000 TO THE MARKET TO PURCHASE A COOL BOT MOBILE WALK-IN COOLER. THIS MOBILE COOLER ALLOWS HCFM TO KEEP PRODUCE FRESHER LONGER FOR THEIR MOBILE MARKET. IN 2015, THE MOBILE MARKET WILL MAKE OVER 400 STOPS IN SPARTANBURG, RUNNING AT LEAST 5 DAYS PER WEEK. THE MOBILE MARKET VISITS CHURCHES, SCHOOLS, COMMUNITY CENTERS, CORPORATE OFFICES AND SPECIAL EVENTS. APPROXIMATELY 250-300 ADULTS AND CHILDREN WERE SERVED. |
