PART I, LINE 2: THE AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION PROVIDES SUPPORT TO RECIPIENTS OF ITS DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM. THE FELLOWSHIP IS AWARDED TO OUTSTANDING STUDENTS WHO ARE CANDIDATES FOR PH.D. DEGREES IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. DOCTORAL AND PROPOSED RESEARCH MUST BE IN THE GENERAL AREA OF SOCIOLEGAL STUDIES OR IN SOCIAL SCIENTIFIC APPROACHES TO LAW, THE LEGAL PROFESSION, OR LEGAL INSTITUTIONS. THE RESEARCH MUST ADDRESS SIGNIFICANT ISSUES IN THE FIELD AND SHOW PROMISE OF A MAJOR CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIAL SCIENTIFIC UNDERSTANDING OF LAW AND LEGAL PROCESS. FELLOWSHIPS ARE HELD IN RESIDENCE AT THE AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION. THE ONE-YEAR APPOINTMENTS TO FELLOWSHIPS ARE FULL TIME. FELLOWS ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE FULLY IN THE ACADEMIC LIFE OF THE ABF SO THAT THEY MAY DEVELOP CLOSE COLLEGIAL TIES WITH OTHER SCHOLARS IN RESIDENCE. THE AMERICAN BAR FOUNDATION SPONSORS A PROGRAM OF SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS TO INTEREST UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS IN PURSUING GRADUATE STUDY IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES. FOUR SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS ARE AWARDED EACH YEAR. EACH STUDENT IS ASSIGNED TO AN ABF RESEARCH PROFESSOR WHO INVOLVES THE STUDENT IN THE PROFESSOR'S RESEARCH PROJECT AND WHO ACTS AS MENTOR DURING THE STUDENT'S TENURE. THE STUDENTS ALSO PARTICIPATE IN A SERIES OF SEMINARS AND FIELD VISITS TO ACQUAINT THEM WITH THE MANY FACETS OF SOCIOLEGAL RESEARCH AND THE LEGAL SYSTEM. THE STUDENTS WORK AT THE ABF OFFICES FOR 35 HOURS A WEEK OVER A PERIOD OF 8 WEEKS.
