ROBERTS ALZHEIMER'S CENTER IS THE FIRST DAY CENTER IN SOUTH ALABAMA DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR PEOPLE WITH ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND OTHER FORMS OF DEMENTIA. THE CENTER IS A SECURE, 8,000-SQUARE-FOOT BUILDING WHICH INCLUDES LIVING ROOM AREAS, A DEN, A KITCHEN, REST AREAS, ENCLOSED COURTYARDS WITH FOUNTAINS, SCREENED PORCHES AND A LARGE FENCED YARD COMPLETE WITH A WALKING PATH AND PUTTING GREEN. THE OPERATION BOUNCE-BACK PROGRAM OFFERS MEDICALLY SUPERVISED EXERCISE, EDUCATION AND COUNSELING TO PATIENTS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES. THE PROGRAM ASSISTS THEM IN LEADING PRODUCTIVE AND ACTIVE LIVES. OPERATION BOUNCE-BACK WAS THE FIRST CARDIAC REHABILITATION PROGRAM IN ALABAMA. PATIENTS OF ALL AGES AND WITH MANY FORMS OF HEART DISEASE BENEFIT FROM THE PROGRAM. THERE WERE 85 ATTENDEES AT THIS YEAR'S ANNUAL BANQUET. THE INFIRMARY PARTICIPATES IN THE MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PROGRAMS, WHICH ACCOUNTED FOR 46.72% OF TOTAL INPATIENT VISITS AND 29.35% OF OUTPATIENT GROSS REVENUE IN THE FISCAL YEAR ENDED MARCH 31, 2015. WHILE THE ORGANIZATION IS REIMBURSED TO SOME EXTENT FOR TREATING MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PATIENTS, THE TOTAL RECEIVED WAS APPROXIMATELY 322,751,000 LESS THAN WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN RECEIVED HAD THESE PROGRAMS PAID FULL CHARGES. IN ADDITION TO SERVING MEDICARE AND MEDICAID PATIENTS, THE INFIRMARY PROVIDES CARE TO PATIENTS WHO MEET THE CRITERIA OF ITS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE POLICY. THE ORGANIZATION HAS EXPANDED THE FEDERAL POVERTY GUIDELINES TO AFFORD CHARITABLE CARE TO LARGER NUMBERS OF ITS PATIENT POPULATION. ALSO, AS A RESULT OF OPERATING THE ONLY HOSPITAL BASED INPATIENT PSYCHIATRIC UNIT IN THE COMMUNITY FOR ADULTS, THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF INDIGENT CARE PROVIDED THROUGH THIS SERVICE. THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF CHARGES FOREGONE FOR HEALTHCARE SERVICES AND SUPPLIES FURNISHED UNDER THE ORGANIZATION'S FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE POLICY FOR FISCAL-YEAR ENDING 2015 WAS APPROXIMATELY 43,453,000, INCLUDING PRESUMPTIVELY ELIGIBLE PATIENTS. SPONSORED BY THE AMERICAN COUNCIL ON EXERCISE, THE INFIRMARY'S OPERATION FITKIDS IS DESIGNED TO EDUCATE CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES ON THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND PROPER NUTRITION. THE EIGHT WEEK PROGRAM IS OFFERED FREE WITH PHYSICIAN REFERRAL TO CHILDREN (AGES 7-11) AT THE ORGANIZATION'S FITNESS CENTER. INFIRMARY HEALTH ESTABLISHED A PROGRAM TO CENTRALIZE, SUPPORT AND RECOGNIZE EMPLOYEES IN EXISTING SERVICE INVOLVEMENT AND TO ENHANCE OVERALL COMMUNITY EFFORTS. A DEPARTMENT AND BUDGET WERE ALSO ESTABLISHED AND SOFTWARE WAS PURCHASED TO ASSIST IN TRACKING EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEER HOURS AND COMMUNITY REQUESTS. FROM APRIL 1, 2014 THROUGH MARCH 31, 2015 MORE THAN 16,500 EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEER HOURS WERE LOGGED. MOBILE INFIRMARY PARTNERED WITH THE MOBILE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM TO SERVE AS THE FIRST HOST SITE IN OUR REGION FOR PROJECT SEARCH, AN INTERNSHIP PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES, PROVIDING THEM WITH ON-THE- JOB TRAINING DURING THEIR SENIOR YEAR OF HIGH SCHOOL. DIRECTORS, MANAGERS AND THEIR DEPARTMENTS VOLUNTEER TO HOST INTERNS IN THEIR AREAS BY TAKING THE TIME TO COACH AND MENTOR STUDENTS. MOBILE INFIRMARY PROVICES AN ON-SITE CLASSROOM FOR DAILY USE, AN ANNUAL OPEN HOUSE EVENT, GRADUATION CEREMONY AND VARIOUS EVENTS PROVIDING GIFTS, CERTIFICATES, INVITATIONS, REFRESHMENTS AND MARKETING. MOBILE INFIRMARY WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE MOBILE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM WITH "THE FUTURE STARTS WITH US" AWARD MAY 8, 2014 AT THE SAENGER THEATRE. FOURTEEN INTERNS ARE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED WITH FULL-TIME JOBS (SIX WITH INFIRMARY HEALTH AND AFFILIATES). TWO HAVE RECEIVED AWARDS: EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH AND ASSOCIATE OF THE QUARTER. IN JUNE OF 2014, INFIRMARY HEALTH HELD THE MOST SUCCESSFUL DONATION DRIVE IN THE HISTORY OF GOODWILL EASTER SEALS OF THE GULF COAST WITH 512 EMPLOYEES DONATING 12,800 POUNDS OF ITEMS RAISING 24,576. GOODWILL EASTER SEALS RELIES ON FUNDING FROM DONATIONS TO FUND ITS MISSION AND NEEDED A CORPORATE PARTNER TO HOST A LARGE DONATION DRIVE, HOPING TO PROVIDE A CONVENIENT LOCATION FOR EMPLOYEES TO DONATE ITEMS. EIGHTY EMPLOYEES VOLUNTEERED TO COLLECT AND UNLOAD DONATIONS AND GIVE RECEIPTS OVER A SIX- DAY PERIOD. DUE TO OUR EFFORTS GOODWILL EASTER SEALS HIRED A FULL-TIME DONATION DRIVE COORDINATOR TO COORDINATE AND ORGANIZE CORPORATE DRIVES. INFIRMARY HEALTH PARTNERED WITH THE MARCH OF DIMES AS ONE OF ONLY TWO HOSPITALS IN THE NATION TO PARTICIPATE AND GRADUATE FROM THE MARCH OF DIMES 39 WEEKS QUALITY INSURANCE PROGRAM--ELIMINATING EARLY ELECTIVE DELIVERIES BEFORE THE 39 WEEK MARK. THE MOBILE INFIRMARY ADMINISTRATOR CHAIRED THE MARCH FOR BABIES WALK RAISING MORE THAN 115,000 FOR MOD. MORE THAN 80 EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATED AND RAISED MORE THAN 30,000 FOR THE INFIRMARY HEALTH TEAM. MORE THAN 1,300 EMPLOYEES PARTICIPATED IN QUARTERLY LIFESOUTH BLOOD DRIVES. INFIRMARY HEALTH IS THE SINGLE LARGEST BLOOD DONOR IN THE REGION. WITH THE GOAL OF BRINGING AWARENESS TO AMERICAN HEART MONTH AND HEART DISEASE INFIRMARY HEALTH PROVIDED FREE SCREENINGS TO 250 COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THIRTY VOLUNTEERS HELPED PROVIDE CHOLESTEROL, WEIGHT AND BLOOD PRESSURE CHECKS. 230 COMMUNITY MEMBERS WERE SCREENED--50 PERCENT OF WHICH HAD ABNORMAL CHL RESULTS AND HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. EMPLOYEES ALSO WORE RED ON FRIDAYS IN FEBRUARY IN HONOR OF NATIONAL HEART AWARENESS MONTH. BANNERS WERE PLACED AT HOSPITAL ENTRANCES AND SPECIAL E-SIGNATURES WERE CREATED FOR EMPLOYEE EMAILS TO BUILD COMMUNITY AWARENESS. T-SHIRTS WERE ALSO AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE THROUGH THE FITNESS CENTER WITH PROCEEDS BENEFITTING THE AHA. INFIRMARY HEALTH ALSO SPONSORED THE AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL GO RED FOR WOMEN LUNCHEON AND HEART WALK WHICH EMPLOYEES RAISED MORE THAN 16,000 FOR THEIR TEAM. INFIRMARY HEALTH SUPPORTS OUR LOCAL AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY WITH NUMEROUS FUNDRAISERS AND EVENTS THROUGH VOLUNTEER, IN-KIND AND FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTIONS SUCH AS: RELAY FOR LIFE, MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER, CHILI COOK-OFF, LOOK GOOD...FEEL BETTER SUPPORT GROUP, REACH TO RECOVERY AND NUMEROUS OTHER AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY EVENTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. EMPLOYEES WORE PINK ON "THINK PINK THURSDAYS" IN OCTOBER TO RAISE AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER. THE MOBILE INFIRMARY CAMPUS WAS PAINTED PINK WITH BANNERS AND SIGNS CREATING AWARENESS OF BREAST CANCER AND THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY DETECTION. INFIRMARY HEALTH EMPLOYEES NOT ONLY HAVE A TEAM EACH YEAR FOR THE MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK, EMPLOYEES ALSO SERVE ON THE PLANNING COMMITTEE AND AS THEIR CHAIR AND CO-CHAIR FOR THE EVENT. INFIRMARY HEALTH WAS A FLAGSHIP SPONSOR FOR THE OCTOBER 2014 EVENT THAT HAD MORE THAN 25,000 PARTICIPANTS. INFIRMARY HEALTH'S EMPLOYEE LED CHILI COOK-OFF TEAM WON THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY'S PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD AND PLACED SECOND IN THE WILD GAME CATEGORY FOR TURTLE CHILI IN MARCH 2014. THE MOBILE INFIRMARY RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM RAISED MORE THAN 5,100 FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, WAS THE CURE SPONSOR AND WON BEST DECORATED TENT AWARD. INFIRMARY HEALTH ESTABLISHED AND SPONSORED THE INAUGURAL DIABESITY SUMMIT. DIABETES AND OBESITY ARE THE BIGGEST HEALTH CHALLENGES FACING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY AND NATION. THE SUMMIT INCREASED AWARENESS OF HOW THE 200 COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE COULD HELP REVERSE THESE TRENDS. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES NUMEROUS COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, SUPPORT GROUPS, HEALTH FAIRS AND SCREENINGS TO BENEFIT AREA CITIZENS. THE PROGRAMS INCLUDE: SKIN CANCER, PROSTATE, HEART, BLOOD PRESSURE, BLOOD SUGAR, ASTHMA AND BONE DENSITY SCREENINGS. THERE ARE LUNCH & LEARN PROGRAMS WITH PHYSICIAN SPEAKERS. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO PARTICIPATES IN AND FACILITATES A NUMBER OF HEALTH RELATED WALKS. THESE PROGRAMS BENEFIT THOUSANDS OF AREA CITIZENS ANNUALLY.
