Modest Needs has always used shared servers to save on cost. In December 2015, our shared server, which contained most of the data necessary to quickly complete the Form 990, suffered a catastrophic failure, after which we learned that the hosting company we had been using had not been performing regular backups as promised. As a result, we had no choice but to completely rebuild all 2015 data from hard copies and other similar physical elements documenting many thousands of contributions and disbursements. As Modest Needs has a very small staff, to complete this work simply took longer than we anticipated, and as a result, for the first time in our history, our Form 990 is being filed significantly past its due date. However, we already have taken steps to ensure that our filings will perpetually on time going forward. Most specifically, we have changed our hosting company and now use private, secure servers which are backed up on both hourly and daily bases, and we now also keep electronic backups on file in our office in the event of a catastrophic data loss which we suffered through no fault of our own in December 2015.
