PRODUCTION:FOUNDED IN 1965 BY ARTS IMPRESARIO PATRICK HAYES, WASHINGTON PERFORMING ARTS (LEGAL NAME: WASHINGTON PERFORMING ARTS SOCIETY) IS ONE OF THE NATION'S LEADING PRODUCERS AND PRESENTERS OF PERFORMING ARTS, ARTS EDUCATION, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT INITIATIVES. A PIONEER IN ARTS DEVELOPMENT AND ARTS EDUCATION IN THE DC AREA, WE SERVE MORE THAN 80,000 RESIDENTS OF ALL AGES ANNUALLY ACROSS THE DISTRICT AND METRO-AREA VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND WITH LIVE ARTS EXPERIENCES OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER, AS WELL AS INSTRUMENTAL, DANCE, AND VOCAL INSTRUCTION AND PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES. EACH YEAR, WE PRESENT APPROXIMATELY 60 MAINSTAGE ARTISTIC PERFORMANCES IN GENRES THAT INCLUDE CLASSICAL MUSIC, JAZZ, GOSPEL, CONTEMPORARY DANCE, AND WORLD MUSIC, AND WORKS THAT BLEND GENRES IN IMAGINATIVE WAYS. TO ENSURE THAT OUR PERFORMANCES ARE ACCESSIBLE TO DIVERSE AUDIENCES, WASHINGTON PERFORMING ARTS PRESENTS A NUMBER OF EVENTS IN HISTORICALLY UNDERSERVED AREAS. ALONGSIDE ITS MAINSTAGE PERFORMANCES, WASHINGTON PERFORMING ARTS ALSO OFFERS INNOVATIVE ARTS EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS, INCLUDING ARTIST RESIDENCIES, WORKSHOPS, MASTER CLASSES, AND NUMEROUS FREE PERFORMANCES IN SCHOOLS AND OTHER PUBLIC SPACES IN AN EFFORT TO CONNECT AUDIENCES DIRECTLY WITH ARTISTS OF EXTRAORDINARY TALENT AND ENCOURAGE ARTS APPRECIATION AND PRACTICE. TO CONTINUE TO EXPAND OUR REACH AND PROMOTE A LIFE CYCLE OF ARTS ACCESS AND LEARNING ACROSS ALL AGE GROUPS, WE RECENTLY CREATED THE MARS URBAN ARTS INITIATIVE. WITH SUBSTANTIAL MULTI-YEAR SUPPORT FROM MRS. JACQUELINE BADGER MARS AND MARS, INCORPORATED, WE LAUNCHED THE MARS URBAN ARTS INITIATIVE (MUAI) IN MAY 2014 TO CULTIVATE, SHOWCASE, AND CONNECT PERFORMING/VISUAL ARTISTS IN METRO DC TO EACH OTHER AND TO LOCAL RESIDENTS. MUAI OFFERS A GRASSROOTS PLATFORM OF FREE PROGRAMS, SUCH AS PANELS, WORKSHOPS, AND PERFORMANCES, THAT LINK TO MAINSTAGE EVENTS AND ENGAGE YOUTH, ADULTS, AND SENIORS ACROSS THE REGION IN HIGH-QUALITY ARTS PROGRAMMING, REGARDLESS OF SOCIOECONOMIC STANDING. ALONGSIDE THESE PROGRAMS ARE THE MARS EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES, ALSO FUNDED BY MRS. MARS AND MARS INCORPORATED, WHICH INCLUDE PUBLIC PERFORMANCES THAT SHOWCASE OUR ARTS EDUCATION STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE METRO DC AREA AND AN ANNUAL ALL-DAY COMMUNITY-BASED ARTS FAIR WITH FREE, FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES.IN RECOGNITION OF OUR VITAL ROLE IN THE DC CULTURAL LANDSCAPE, WE WERE AWARDED A 2012 NATIONAL MEDAL OF ARTS, MAKING US THE FIRST ARTS PRESENTER OF ITS KIND TO BE SO HONORED. WE ALSO RECEIVED A 2012 MAYOR'S ARTS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN SERVICE TO THE ARTS. IN 2015, OUR ORGANIZATIONAL HONORS INCLUDED THE 2015 MAYOR'S ARTS AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO ARTS EDUCATION. THIS IS THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS HONOR CONFERRED BY THE CITY ON ARTISTS, TEACHERS, NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS, AND PATRONS OF THE ARTS. ON THE NATIONAL STAGE, OUR CAP PROGRAMS RECEIVED THE 2015 YALE DISTINGUISHED MUSIC EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP AWARD FROM THE YALE SCHOOL OF MUSIC. WE ARE ALSO PLEASED TO REPORT NEW COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND CREATIVE PLACEMAKING INITIATIVES. WITH SUBSTANTIAL SUPPORT BY THE ANDREW W. MELLON FOUNDATION, OUR COLLABORATIVE AND HISTORIC THREE-YEAR ORCHESTRAL MUSIC FESTIVAL WITH THE JOHN F. KENNEDY CENTER, SHIFT, WILL BEGIN IN SPRING 2017. THE INAUGURAL FESTIVAL PARTICIPANTS WILL BE THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (ATLANTA, GA), BOULDER PHILHARMONIC (BOULDER, CO), THE KNIGHTS (BROOKLYN, NY), AND NORTH CAROLINA SYMPHONY (RALEIGH, NC). SHIFT WILL INCLUDE A FULL SLATE OF ARTS EDUCATION AND MARS URBAN ARTS INITIATIVE RESIDENCY ACTIVITIES ACROSS MULTIPLE METRO DC SITES. MOREOVER, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH 11TH STREET BRIDGE PARK, WE WERE AMONG JUST 38 RECIPIENTS AND THE ONLY ONES IN DC FROM A POOL OF NEARLY 1,300 TO RECEIVE A 2015 ARTPLACE AMERICA NATIONAL GRANTS PROGRAM AWARD FOR OUR CREATIVE PLACEMAKING INITIATIVE. FOR THIS INITIATIVE, WHICH BEGAN IN AUGUST 2015, WE HAVE BEEN DEVELOPING WITH RESIDENTS COMMUNITY-BASED ARTS PROGRAMMING IN WARD 8 THAT HAS BEEN ANCHORED BY OUR MARS URBAN ARTS AND EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVES. AS WE MARK OUR 50TH ANNIVERSARY IN THE 2016/17 SEASON, WASHINGTON PERFORMING ARTS CONTINUES TO EMBRACE THE ORGANIZATIONAL PHILOSOPHY ESPOUSED FROM THE BEGINNING BY OUR FOUNDER, MR. HAYES: "EVERYBODY IN, NOBODY OUT!" TO THIS END, WE DESIGN AND PRESENT PROGRAMS INTENDED TO REACH THE WIDEST POSSIBLE CONSTITUENCIES IN THE GREATER DC REGION: PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, INCOME LEVELS, CULTURAL BACKGROUNDS, AND AREAS OF ARTISTIC INTEREST AND EXPERTISE. ANOTHER OF OUR GUIDING PHILOSOPHIES IS "THE CITY IS OUR STAGE": AS OPPOSED TO OPERATING FROM ONE CENTRALIZED PERFORMANCE VENUE, WE PRESENT CONCERTS, DANCE PERFORMANCES, AND MORE IN VENUES OF DIFFERENT SIZES AND SENSIBILITIES THROUGHOUT THE REGION-CONCERT HALLS, COLLEGIATE AUDITORIUMS, NIGHTCLUBS, CHURCHES AND SYNAGOGUES, OUTDOOR PLAZAS, AND MORE. THROUGH THIS EXPANSIVE APPROACH, EACH EVENT MARRIES ARTIST AND AUDIENCE, ART FORM AND COMMUNITY IN A CUSTOMIZED AND CULTURALLY ENRICHING EXPERIENCE. LASTLY, GIVEN THE COSMOPOLITAN NATURE OF THE DISTRICT AS OUR NATION'S CAPITAL AND AS THE HOST CITY FOR DOZENS OF EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES, WE EMBODY A VISION OF "THE WORLD IN OUR CITY," DRAWING ON THE MANY DIVERSE INTERNATIONAL TRADITIONS OF OUR REGION'S RESIDENTS AND REGULARLY INVITING DISTINGUISHED ARTISTS AND OTHER VISITORS FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO SHARE IN OUR ONGOING CELEBRATION OF THE PERFORMING ARTS.
