Part III, Line 1a: If organization elected under SFAS 116 to not report are, historical treasures, o Collections are not reflected as assets in the statement of financial position. Purchases of collection items are reflected first as expense and then as decreases in unrestricted net assets in the year in which the items are acquired or as decreases in temporarily restricted net assets if the assets used to purchase the items are restricted by donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statement as donations or as assets. Proceeds from deaccessions or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriate net asset classes.Description of collections The Museum maintains over 1.5 million artifacts and natural history specimens in its permanent collections. Collections are maintained in the following disciplines: anthropology (including archaeology and ethnology), botany, entomology, gems and minerals, malacology, paleontology, science history and technology, and vertebrate zoology. The artifacts and specimens come from worldwide locations and were acquired by the Museum through gifts from the general public, staff field collection and salvage efforts, and purchases and exchanges with other scientific organizations. The Museum uses the artifacts and specimens for public exhibition, as loans to other museums, and for educational programs and research.Stewardship policy for collections The Museum is responsible for the preservation of its collections in perpetuity. Under the direction of the Collections Committee, the Board of Trustees, the President of the Museum, the Director of Collections, and the Curatorial Staff, collections continue to be cared for, used, and expanded. The proceeds of any sales of collection items are used to acquire other items for collections. The Museum maintains cataloged records of accessions, deaccessions, and items in each particular collection.
