NATIONAL MUSEUM PROGRAM - THE ARMY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION (AHF) MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS TOWARD CONSTRUCTION, INCLUDING THE EXPENDITURE OF $11.8 MILLION (SHOWN AS OTHER ASSETS IN THE BALANCE SHEET) TOWARD DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY (NMUSA) ON FORT BELVOIR, VIRGINIA DURING 2016.WE BEGAN THE YEAR WITH A SUCCESSFUL NEGOTIATION OF THE 84-ACRE, 50-YEAR GROUND LEASE WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY'S CORPS OF ENGINEERS IN EARLY AUGUST. THE FOUNDATION ASSUMED THE LEAD IN MANAGING THE COMPLEX PROCESS OF PROJECT CONSTRUCTION, OBTAINED APPROVAL OF A 10-YEAR BUSINESS PRO FORMA, AND COORDINATED THE INITIAL STAGES OF SITE PREPARATION WITH THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS WHO BROUGHT IN ELECTRICAL, WATER AND GAS UTILITIES. THE FOUNDATION CONTRACTED SKIDMORE, OWINGS & MERRILL (SOM) AS THE ARCHITECT OF RECORD TO COMPLETE THE NMUSA FINAL 100% ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION (IFC) DESIGN IN OCTOBER 2016, WSP/PARSONS BRINCKERHOFF WAS ALSO BROUGHT ON TO THE PROJECT TO COMMISSION THE MUSEUM BUILDING WITH A LEADERSHIP IN ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (LEED) SILVER CERTIFICATION. CLARK CONSTRUCTION, THE FOUNDATION'S GENERAL CONTRACTOR, BEGAN THE DESIGN/BUILD OF THE MUSEUM'S MECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL AND PLUMBING (MEP) AND INITIATED PURCHASE OF LONG-LEAD MATERIALS LIKE STRUCTURAL STEEL FOR THE MUSEUM. WITH THE APPROVAL OF CLARK CONSTRUCTION'S STORM WATER POLLUTION PREVENTION PLANS, THE VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (VDEQ) APPROVED BOTH THE NMUSA STORM WATER MANAGEMENT AND EROSION AND SEDIMENT CONTROL PLANS.CONCURRENT WITH CLARK CONSTRUCTION'S PROGRESS ON THE MUSEUM BUILDING, THE NATIONAL CAPITAL PLANNING COMMISSION APPROVED THE FOUNDERS HALL FINAL BUILDING PLANS WITH THE 100% ISSUED FOR CONSTRUCTION (IFC) DESIGN OF ARCHITECT INTEC GROUP, WHICH CLEARED THE WAY FOR SCOTT-LONG CONSTRUCTION TO SOLICIT BIDS FOR FUTURE CONSTRUCTION OF FOUNDERS HALL WITH LEED SILVER CERTIFICATION. TOWARD THE END OF 2016 THE MUSEUM'S AUDIO VISUAL (AV), INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT), AND SECURITY/ACCESS INFRASTRUCTURE SYSTEM (AV/IT/SEC) DESIGN ARCHITECTURE WAS UNDER DEVELOPMENT, PROMPTING THE FOUNDATION TO HOST A SERIES OF AV/IT WORKSHOPS AND MEETINGS BRINGING THE TOGETHER THE ARMY PROJECT TEAM, THE ARMY CHIEF INFORMATION OFFICER/G6, AND NETCOM TO ENSURE THE MUSEUM WILL HAVE A FLEXIBLE, DEPENDABLE, AND SECURE AV/IT INFRASTRUCTURE TO SUPPORT THE MUSEUM EXHIBITS.THE EXPENDITURES SHOWN ON THIS FORM RELATE TO PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT INCLUDING FUTURE PROGRAM OFFERINGS AND OPERATIONAL SUPPORT FOR THE NEW MUSEUM. THE EXPENDITURES RELATING TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MUSEUM ARE RECORDED AS A CAPITAL ASSET. THEY ARE NOT SHOWN AS EXPENSES IN THE STATEMENT OF OPERATIONS. THE CURRENT YEAR EXPENDITURES RELATING TO THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW MUSEUM IS $11.8M. PLEASE SEE THE BALANCE SHEET UNDER "DEVELOPMENT COSTS" FOR THE ACTUAL COSTS. HISTORICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM - FOUNDED IN 1983, THE ARMY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION (AHF) IS MEMBER-BASED NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY AND EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ON THE ARMY'S STORIED 242-YEAR HISTORY. IN ADDITION TO SERVING AS THE FUNDRAISER FOR THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY, THE FOUNDATION IS ENGAGED IN A NUMBER OF HISTORICAL ACTIVITIES. AHF CONDUCTS STAFF RIDES FOR ITS MEMBERS AND GUESTS. THE RIDES ARE ESPECIALLY POPULAR WITH VARIOUS AGE GROUPS AND PROVIDE DETAILED EXAMINATIONS OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND CIVIL WAR BATTLES. OUR CHIEF HISTORIAN AND TWO FOUNDATION VOLUNTEERS CONDUCTED TWO STAFF RIDES DURING 2016, BOTH OF WHICH WERE TWO-DAY TRIPS. THE FIRST WAS IN MAY COVERING THE APPOMATTOX CAMPAIGN AND INCLUDED 38 PARTICIPANTS. THE SECOND ONE IN OCTOBER, AGAIN WITH 38 DIFFERENT PARTICIPANTS, TRAVELED THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY AND EXAMINED THE KEY BATTLES FOUGHT THERE DURING 1864.SINCE 1995 AHF HAS PROVIDED HISTORICAL RESEARCH FOR ITS MEMBERSHIP, TEACHERS, STUDENTS, VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES, AND MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA BECAUSE THE DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY DOES NOT PROVIDE SUCH SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC. THE SUBJECT OF MANY OF THESE QUERIES OFTEN RELATES TO FAMILY HISTORIES-DETAILS OF A RELATIVE'S ARMY SERVICE, FOR EXAMPLE-BUT THEY CAN ALSO COVER A WIDE RANGE OF OTHER SUBJECT. THIS IS A FREE SERVICE PROVIDED BY FOUNDATION STAFF HISTORIANS WHO CONDUCT THE RESEARCH IN THE FOUNDATION'S OWN MILITARY HISTORY LIBRARY, AT THE U.S. ARMY CENTER OF MILITARY HISTORY, THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES, AND VIA ONLINE RESOURCES. IN 2016, THE AHF STAFF RESPONDED TO 341 INQUIRIES FROM PATRONS IN 41 STATES AND FOUR COUNTRIES.FOUR ISSUES OF ON POINT WERE PUBLISHED IN 2016, WITH APPROXIMATELY 6,000 COPIES PER ISSUE MAILED OUT, MOST GOING TO MEMBERS AND DONORS. THE FOUNDATION HAS PUBLISHED ON POINT, WHICH STARTED AS QUARTERLY EIGHT-PAGE NEWSLETTER AND IS NOW A FULL-COLOR, AWARD-WINNING, 68-PAGE MAGAZINE. ON POINT FEATURES ARTICLES ON A WIDE RANGE OF ARMY HISTORY AND ARTWORK, ALONG WITH MILITARY BOOK REVIEWS AND NEWS ABOUT THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN FOR THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY. THE PUBLICATION INCLUDES ARTICLES BY NOTABLE MILITARY HISTORIANS AND ALSO PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR EMERGING HISTORIANS AND NOVICE AUTHORS TO GET PUBLISHED IN A HISTORY MAGAZINE. SINCE AHF HAS PRESENTED DISTINGUISHED WRITING AWARDS FOR BOOKS AND ARTICLES ON U.S ARMY HISTORY. THE AWARDS GO TO AUTHORS WHOSE WORK HAS MADE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE HISTORICAL LITERATURE OF THE U.S. ARMY. THE MUSEUM EXCELLENCE AWARDS ARE PRESENTED TO MUSEUMS IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR WORK IN SUPPORT OF A PARTICULAR EXHIBIT OR MUSEUM PROGRAM. A 2016 MUSEUM EXCELLENCE AWARD OF $1,000 WAS PRESENTED TO THE U.S. ARMY WOMEN'S MUSEUM, FORT LEE, VA ($1,000).IN 2016, THE ARMY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION BEGAN THE SOLDIER EXPERIENCE SERIES, A PROGRAM DESIGNED AS A PRELUDE TO A SERIES THAT WILL BE CONDUCTED IN THE MUSEUM WHEN IT OPENS. THE 2016 THREE-PART SERIES INCLUDED SPEAKERS AND EXHIBITS ON SELECT GROUPS WHO HAVE MADE A SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE ARMY. THE FIRST OF THESE WAS HELD IN FEBRUARY 2016 AND TOLD THE STORY OF AFRICAN AMERICAN SOLDIERS, TO INCLUDE 104 ARMY DOCTORS, WHO SERVED IN WORLD WAR I. THE SECOND OPENED IN MARCH 2016 AND FOCUSED ON WOMEN IN THE ARMY, AND, PRIOR TO WORLD WAR II, WOMEN IN SUPPORT OF THE ARMY (SUCH AS THE HELLO GIRLS WHO HANDLED ARMY COMMUNICATIONS AND CIVILIAN NURSES WHO CARED FOR THE WOUNDED NEAR THE FRONT LINES. THE SUBJECT OF THIRD INSTALLMENT, HELD IN MAY 2016, FEATURED ASIAN AND PACIFIC AMERICAN SOLDIERS AND THEIR CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE ARMY. EACH PROGRAM FEATURED EXHIBITS WITH UNIFORMS, EQUIPMENT, WEAPONS, AND OTHER ARTIFACTS, PHOTOGRAPHS, VIDEOS, INTERACTIVE TOUCH SCREENS, AND SPEAKERS ON EACH OF THE THREE TOPICS. THE SOLDIER EXPERIENCE SERIES WAS HELD IN THE ASSOCIATION OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY'S CONFERENCE AND EVENTS CENTER IN ARLINGTON, VA. APPROXIMATELY 100 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE OPENING EVENTS FOR EACH INSTALLMENT. THE EXHIBITS WERE THEN OPEN FOR VIEWING BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC FOR SEVERAL DAYS AFTER THE OPENING.THE ARMY HISTORICAL FOUNDATION'S INTERN PROGRAM PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL, UNDERGRADUATE, AND GRADUATE STUDENTS WHO HAVE AN INTEREST IN U.S. ARMY HISTORY TO GAIN PRACTICAL WORK EXPERIENCE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THE FOUNDATION'S STAFF HISTORIANS.
