FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4A The Leadership Training Academy (the Academy) class comprised 42 Fellows in fiscal year ending 2017. The Fellows were drawn from 20 states, 11 of which are hostile to women accessing reproductive health care. This is the most geographically diverse class to date. We also had representation from the District of Columbia. The class comprised ob/gyns, family medicine doctors, a pediatrician and a maternal fetal medicine specialist. They made rounds to 44 offices in Congress to talk about insurance coverage for abortion and anti-abortion violence, the latter of which has been on the rise since the Trump Administration has taken office. Four Fellows participated in a press conference featuring Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Rep. Slaughter (D-NY), Rep. DeGette (D-CO), Rep. Lowey (D-NY), Rep. Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Frankel (D-FL) and Rep. Bera (D-CA). With the Academy class of 2017 graduated, Physicians has trained 284 physicians as skilled advocates. Academy alumni are Ob/Gyns, Family Medicine practitioners, Emergency Medicine doctors, Pediatric/Adolescent Medicine specialists, Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists, Internists, and Psychiatrists. They work in 42 states to advance reproductive and sexual health care and to advocate on behalf of their patients and colleagues who provide. Among other program efforts, our Education, Research and Training unit works to advance medical education through the Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health Education Program (ARSHEP). Forty-five ARSHEP faculty members (all adolescent health specialists) delivered 101 presentations of our curriculum, reaching 6,575 youth-serving health care professionals in 20 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Three new modules were created for our American Pediatric Association-endorsed curriculum on HIV PrEP, abortion, and commercial sexual exploitation of children. In addition, faculty member Dr. Melanie Gold and staffer Taylor Rose Ellsworth published "Interviewing Adolescents About Sexual Health" in Pediatrics Clinics of North America. In addition to the work above, Physicians for Reproductive Health served as a fiscal sponsor for the following: Creating a Clinician Corps and Global Doctors for Choice, LLC.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4B PUBLIC POLICY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT - The Partnership for Abortion Provider Safety Advisory Committee (more than 35 partner Organizations, which have a variety of resources to support abortion providers) met to discuss the projects needs Assessment and to share experiences with harassment and ways to better connect networks of providers to needed resources. Beginning with the day of the inauguration, Physicians posted a story a day on social media, as part of our Voices of Courage story telling project. In the fiscal year, we posted 254 stories. Our stories show the real-life harm that the Trump-Pence administration, Congress, state restrictions, and religious refusals have on peoples access to birth control and abortion across the country. We will continue this education program until our bodies, our families, and our communities are safe. Over the past year, Physicians was responsible for over 3,200 media hits responding to attacks from the Trump administration, anti-choice cabinet nominations, including the ACA repeal efforts, contraceptive coverage attacks, abortion bans, and transgender health care. During the fiscal year, Physicians launched a new brand and website that showcases the compassion and courage of our physicians and our work, giving us a platform to more easily communicate with supporters, physicians, and donors.
FORM 990, PART III, LINE 4C VOICE AND ENGAGEMENT - President Donald Trump began his term by reinstating and broadening the Global Gag Rule, supporting the GOPs bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, and securing his first anti-choice appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court with Justice Neil Gorsuch. Congress approved, and Trump signed legislation allowing states to exclude health centers that perform abortions from receiving Title X funding for contraception, STI interventions, cancer screenings, and other non-abortion services, including Planned Parenthood. And this was just the beginning of a non-stop attempt to constrain women from accessing the health care services they need. In response, this first year of the Trump-Pence administration saw increased action at Physicians for Reproductive Health (Physicians). Donors amped up their giving (for example, our major benefit of the year had a 10% increase in ticket sales and a 48% increase in net income), and Physicians programs expanded to meet the need to protect access to reproductive health care. Now in our 25th year, Physicians has earned a reputation as the home for abortion providers and other doctors who want to enter the public dialogue as advocates for reproductive health, rights, and justice. Physicians supports and trains doctors and other health care providers to bring the rational, nonpartisan voice of science and medicine to the frequently irrational debates that have led to devastating local, state, and federal policies on reproductive health care. These physician voices are described by a colleague as hugely important to shifting the persistent narrative about abortion. In 2016, we undertook the creation of a new strategic plan for fiscal years ending 2018 through 2020. The plan was completed and approved in fiscal year ending 2017. Reflecting the ideas, insights, and guidance generously offered by leaders in the field as well as from planning meetings with Physicians staff and board, the Strategic Plan charts our organizations direction and the priorities over the next three years, as Physicians implements a set of dynamic goals and strategies. Physicians continued to provide expert testimony, regulatory comments, briefings, lobby days, And amicus briefs, among other tactics, where our physician-advocates inserted sound evidence-based medicine into numerous federal and state matters. Physicians Board members, Leadership Training Academy Fellows, doctors from our network, and staff had contact with federal legislative offices, providing information on the medical and public health consequences of proposed legislation and agency regulations. Bills we worked on included the Hyde Amendment, PEACE ACT, Womens Health Protection Act, Childrens Health Insurance Program, Military Access to Reproductive Health Care, the HEAL Act, and a 20- week abortion ban. We fought against attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the new administrations cabinet appointments, and the Supreme Court nomination of Neil Gorsuch, among others. Physicians was an endorser of the Womens March in January 2017. Activities in the states followed suit, with doctor mobilization, advocacy and media efforts to fight against infringements on reproductive health care access and to the doctor-patient relationship through legislation and regulations in: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Texas, among others. Physicians joined an amicus brief with the American College of Ob/Gyns and the National Abortion Federation in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals for a case involving David Daleiden/Center for Medical Progresss FOIA request for names of University of Washington employees working on fetal tissue research. The brief argues against releasing personally identifying information that could put health care providers at risk of antiabortion violence. And we joined an amicus brief in a challenge by Planned Parenthood to Indianas mandatory ultrasound law with AMWA, ARHP, and the National Physicians Alliance. And, we submitted an amicus brief in Schroeder v. Rauner in the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois. This brief is in support of amendments to Illinois religious refusal law.
