Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: New Leaders InitiativesNew Leaders Initiative identifies, honors, supports and sustains outstanding environmental youth leaders in North America, and cinfers the premiere environmental youth prize, the Brower Youth Awards. Since 2000, the Brower Youth Award has recognized outstanding youth leaders who are making strides in the environmental movement. Each year, six young people based in North America are awarded the prize, joining a growing and diverse cadre of green leaders who are publicly recognized for their sustainable projects, innovative ideas and informed analyses. Year-round coaching is provided to award winners, and additional services are offered to a broad broader spectrum of youth environmental leaders through the "Movement in Green" strategic support program and micro-grant program. A regular speaker series, Rooted and Rising, complements the award and support programs by offering an intergenerational forum to discussion solutions to pressing environmental issues. Program ServicesEarth Island Institute cultivates environmental leadership by acting as an incubator for new programs and providing long-term support for established environmental projects, giving crucial assistance to groups and individuals promoting ecological sustainability and social justice. Project Support provides incubation services to our project network; Public Education publishes Earth Island Journal, a quarterly publication on international environmental issues as well as Earth Islands website and monthly IslandWire e-newsletter; our New Leaders Initiative oversees the Brower Youth Awards and emerging leaders; Restoration Initiative supports grassroots environmental restoration. The following is a list of 77 projects under sponsorship with Earth Island during all or part of FY 2017. This includes 10 new projects and 6 that either spun-off to become independent organizations or closed down.AGRICULTURE & FOOD SYSTEMSCultivate Oregon is raising awareness about the socio-political and health implications of pesticide-intensive transgenic crops, while also strengthening seed diversity, cultural connections to food, and urban and rural alliances.Ecovet Global ~ partners with organizations and communities around the world to improve animal health (domestic and wildlife) as a sustainable path to resolving issues connecting poverty, threats to public health, food insecurity, and loss of biodiversity.Food Shift is developing sustainable solutions that reduce wasted food and hunger by addressing the underlying structural causes and developing an effective and equitable system for food recovery and redistribution.Hempstead Project HEARTs mission is to use music and the arts to raise awareness of the many benefits of hemp for people and the planet. Oakland Food Policy Council is a 21-seat community council working towards an equitable and sustainable food system.Real Food Real Stories humanizes the food system and uplifts local changemakers through authentic storytelling to connect and inspire eaters to social actions.Urban Farmacy** is a wellness, entrepreneurship and education organization that provides personalized sustainable food production programs for schools, businesses, and communities.CLEAN ENERGY & CLIMATE CHANGECarbonfreeDC** is a grassroots initiative to promote local environmental causes and build community resilience in Washington, DC.Center for Safe Energy** strengthens democratic society and improves environmental conditions with a focus on energy issues in the former Soviet Union. Form 990, Part VI, Line 12c: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts We require our Board and Executive Director to update their declarations relative to conflict of interest annually or when their status changes, whichever comes first. If a conflict becomes evident in the operations of the Organization, our procedures provide for the Board President to act to assure that any potential conflict is recognized and minimized where possible.
Form 990, Part VI, Line 15a: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management Earth Island Institute Policy for Board Approval of CompensationThe Executive Director of Earth Island Institute is the principal representative of Earth Island Institute, Inc., and the person responsible for the efficient operation of the organization. Therefore, it is the desire of Earth Island Institute to provide a fair yet reasonable and not excessive compensation for the Executive Director and other highly compensated employees and consultants.The annual process for determining compensation is as follows: Earth Island Institute's full board shall annually evaluate the Executive Director on his/her performance, and ask for his/her input on matters of performance and compensation.Board Approval. A Board Evaluation Committee will collect research and information in order to make a recommendation to the full board for the compensation (salary and benefits) of the Executive Director and other highly compensated employees or consultants based on a review of comparability data. For example, the Committee will secure data that documents compensation levels and benefits for similarly qualified individuals In comparable positions at similar organizations. This data may include the following:1 Salary and benefit compensation studies by independent sources;2 Written job offers for positions at similar organizations;3 Documented telephone calls about similar positions at both nonprofit and for- profit organizations;and4 Information obtained from the IRS Form 990 filings of similar organizations.Concurrent Documentation. To approve the compensation for the Executive Director and other highly compensated employees and consultants the board must document how It reached its decisions, including the data on which It relied, in minutes of the meeting during which the compensation was approved. Documentation will include:a) A description of the compensation and benefits and the date it was approved;b) The members of the board who were present during the discussion about compensation and benefits, and the results of the vote;c) A description of the comparability data relied upon and how the data was obtained; andd) Any actions taken {such as abstaining from discussion and vote) with respect to consideration of the compensation by anyone who is otherwise a member of the board but who had a conflict of interest with respect to the decision on the compensation and benefits.Independence in Setting Compensation: The Chair of the board of directors, who is a volunteer and not compensated by the Earth Island Institute, will operate independently without undue influence from the Executive Director.No member of the Evaluation Committee will be a staff member, the relative of a staff member, or have any relationship with staff that could present a conflict of interest.
