Education Programs and Community OutreachDuring the 2017 year, the museum frequently partnered with Coachella Valley school districts and colleges, community organizations, and local city governments, and we hosted Free Thursday Evenings (at both the main museum location and Architecture and Design Center) in conjunction with the weekly VillageFest street fair in downtown Palm Springs, which often includes free film screenings and interactive programs related to the museum's exhibitions. The Free 2nd Sundays program continues on the second Sunday of each month at which the museum offers special family gallery tours, art activities, artist demonstrations, and films, in addition to its regular exhibitions. Our facility in Palm Desert increased its educational programming with Art Lab, Free Fridays and an Earth Day celebration which served 3,200 visitors to the city. The total number of visitors served by combined education programs across three sites is in excess of 47,000 Coachella Valley residents.Adult Education Programs - In addition to docent-led tours of the permanent collection and special exhibitions, adults participated in individual classes as well as intensive studio art workshops in drawing, painting, printmaking and mixed media; evening lectures in the Annenberg Theater and weekend symposia; free community days; and outreach programs.Child and Teen Programs - Attendance for the fiscal year included approximately 20,000 students and children who participated in free school tours geared to specific age levels and curricula, as well as children's summer art camp, free community days such as Day of the Dead at our main museum and our Palm Desert site, and those who visited the museum with their family or to complete school assignments.Specialized museum education programs serving child and youth this past year included:Pop-Up Studio This program at the Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space provides multiple opportunities for children, families, and teens to interact with professional artists who are in residence at the museum and for audiences to understand their creative process and engage in their own hands-on arts making inspired by these individual artists.Platt Museum Art Camp - (5-day art workshops for children ages 3-12) 91 students (33 scholarships)Eyes On/Hands On - (specialized 1-hour docent-led tour of the museum galleries followed by an art-making project in our art studio) 2,610 K-6th grade studentsArt Within Reach - (4-lesson site-visit and field trip program for third grade students in collaboration with the Palm Springs Unified School District); 1,400 3rd grade studentsTeen Docent - (academic extra-curricular enrichment activity for high school students who tour elementary school children) 12 10th through 12th grade students: 72 volunteer hours per Teen Docent, 500 3rd through 5th grade students served between October and December 2016Sheffer/Scheffler Arts Education Space - (a community gallery and activity space for children, families, adults, and the community.)
