Program Services: 4a: Connecting the Community to Maritime Heritage:The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) receives over 40,000 visitors annually and focuses on interactive exhibits and hands-on educational programming. SBMM exhibits highlight the local maritime history of the California central coast and give visitors and locals a sense of Santa Barbaras rich, thousand-year maritime history. Exhibits honor the people such as commercial divers or lighthouse keepers, who, through everyday actions, enrich our lives today.Permanent exhibits include the First Order Fresnel Lens from Point Conception Lighthouse, Purisima Diving Bell, JIM Diving Suit, Honda Disaster, and Shipwreck of the California Goldrush Steamship Winfield Scott.During the past year SBMM opened several new exhibits, including The History of Oil in the Santa Barbara Channel, Face to Face with the Great Whites, featuring photography by Ralph Clevenger, and Rum Running, Sailors, and Prohibition. During this fiscal year SBMM began planning a major upgrade of its Military Exhibit, scheduled to open in 2020, and worked on two temporary exhibits, Fishing with Paper and Ink, and Mermaids: Myths and Legends.The Museum also held or hosted numerous special events, including the Parade of Lights, Harbor & Seafood Festival Wine Garden, Kardboard Kayak Races, and a Stars & Stripes USO annual fundraiser, honoring the Santa Barbara Navy League and Pierre Claeyssens Veterans Foundation.

Program Services: 4b: EducationThe Museums Spirit of Dana Point Tall Ship Overnight Program, which places Santa Barbara County fourth-graders aboard a tall ship for the evening, where they live the life of an 1830s sailor visiting Santa Barbara Harbor, served 460 local students in September and October 2018. Based upon Richard Henry Dana Jr.s best-selling book Two Years before the Mast, students read an abridged version of the book and then serve as first mates and crew while staff from the Ocean Institute, which owns the tall ship, act out the four major characters in the book. Teachers, who are instructing their students in California history in fourth-grade, appreciate the program because it improves students speaking and listening skills, improves self-esteem, develops leadership and teamwork skills, and increases class participation. Students are taught to project their voices, to not carry out an order until they are told to carry on, and work together to row a dinghy, raise a bosuns chair, and cook meals. By living the life of the characters in this book, students learn to project themselves into other historical topics they will read in future years; and studies show that these types of hands-on, interactive programs are especially effective for English as a Second Language students. Students regularly identify this program as their favorite field trip activity of the year. The museums Marine Science Program puts third- through eighth graders aboard the local fishing boat Stardust or Coral Sea for a cruise into the Santa Barbara Channel. In January and February 2019, 551 local students utilized their math and science skills as they experienced marine life in its natural environment, studied phyto- and zooplankton under the microscope, and learned the composition of our ocean floor. This program is offered to Santa Barbara County schools and after-school programs, such as Girls, Inc., Boys and Girls Club, and the Housing Authority. Just like the Spirit Overnight Program, the Marine Science Program is provided free of charge to underserved, Title I schools and groups through the generosity of local foundations and private donors. Funding includes program cost, bussing, docking and transport fees, supplies and staff time. For many of the more than 1,000 youth we serve in these programs, it is their first experience on a boat going out into the Santa Barbara Channel.Several other programs also help to introduce children and adults to the history of the Santa Barbara Channel both at the museum and in the community. Family Nights features 5-6 activity tables, such as LEGO building, painting, and other maritime-inspired crafts in which parents can participate and learn with their children. SBMM works with local artist Sondra Weiss to bring Love Letters to the Sea to local after-school groups. In this program students watch a short film about the harmful effect plastics have when they get into our rivers and oceans and then create and decorate their own envelope, using old sea charts, and write a letter stating why they think it is important to keep our oceans clean. These Love Letters are then delivered to world leaders by celebrities such as explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau or musician Jack Johnson. The Museum also piloted Ocean Connections, putting more young students out on a local whale-watching boat, with Marine Biologist Holly Lohuis, who has dived all over the world with Jean-Michel Cousteau. This program includes marine and coastal environment education, and again gets youth out into the Santa Barbara Channel. SBMM also participated in World Ocean Day for the first time, featuring Love Letters to the Sea and other ocean-related activities and information tables.SBMM provides docent led group tours to school and community groups, and volunteers reach out to another nearly 3,000 students at local school science nights, with activities like charting and navigation, boat and lighthouse projects that utilize the students math and science skills. Once a month the museum hosts a lecture program, which continues to grow in popularity. Topics this past year included 50-year anniversary of the 1969 Oil Spill, ocean exploration aboard Bob Ballards E/V Nautilus, and the Santa Barbara Channels Marine Protected Areas. The Childrens Gallery offers families a fun, interactive experience while learning about ocean ecology and local marine life. The care of our ocean environment for future generations depends on the education of our youth and communities, and that education begins at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum.
