Organizational EffectivenessImpact and its supporting organization, Achievements Unlimited Foundation (together the "Foundations"), recognize that many nonprofit organizations often lack the expertise and financial resources to invest in organizational assessments, strategic planning and highly effective fundraising training to ensure their organization's effectiveness and long-term sustainability. The Foundations partnered with Dakota Medical Foundation through the Impact Institute (Institute) to provide support, education, training, and coaching sessions for nonprofit partner organizations. Since inception in 2005, more than 5,300 nonprofit executives and directors from over 500 nonprofit organizations have trained in Institute leadership and fundraising concepts.Nonprofit Board and Management Training: Training boards and key management personnel to operate their organizations in a highly effective and efficient manner is a key education focus for the Foundations. Having encouraged many area nonprofit organizations to attend the Institute's education and training programs, in 2019, the Institute helped readily-equip 500 charitable organizations to solve complex community challenges. With a particular emphasis in fundraising, many charities continued their professional development in a fundraising curriculum and coaching program called High Impact Fundraising. This program was developed to build a mastery of fundraising and leadership. As a result of participating in fundraising training, a study of 23 nonprofit organizations showed community support on Giving Hearts Day increased over an eleven-year period form $380,000 in donations in 2008 to $2.5 million in donations in 2019.Grant Writing Services: Since 2005, the Foundations have supported grant writing assistance for health-related nonprofit organizations to generate additional financial resources for their programs. Since the formal addition of grant writing assistance, the Foundations and other regional nonprofit organizations have secured over $28.9 million in grant funding.

Economic DevelopmentThe Foundations support the economic development of North Dakota communities by initiating and funding various initiatives directed at assisting small businesses located in North Dakota. In 2007, Impact entered into a 30-year, $750,000 loan commitment with the USDA Office of Rural Development under its Intermediary Relending Loan Program (IRP). Impact committed an equity contribution of $187,500, equaling a total loan pool of $937,500, available to qualifying North Dakota businesses at low interest rates. Dakota Business Lending (DBL), formerly Dakota Certified Development Corporation, provided a grant to Impact to meet the equity requirement under the terms of the USDA loan. DBL manages the day-to-day operations of the IRP under an agreement with Impact.Since inception, Impact has provided ten (10) loans to small businesses in rural communities, equaling more than $1,166,942. As of December 31, 2019, Impact had four (4) loans outstanding with a total IRP Loans Receivable balance of $236,420 (net of allowance for doubtful accounts of $28,125), included in Part X, Line 13, Investments - Program Related and Schedule D Part VIII.

Community SupportImpact provides grants to support community events, statewide nonprofit organizations and other societal improvement initiatives. Grants were provided for these purposes from established Impact charitable funds, other grants, and donor contributions received by the Foundations. Impact provided funding to restock the food shelter at Great Plains Food Bank through the support of the Fargo-based Fill-the-Dome program. The Foundations have given back to North Dakota communities impacted by natural disasters and are ready to help coordinate and provide financial support of fundraising efforts when needed. Impact established and maintains a Clubs for Kids Initiative, which promotes community youth golf programs by providing equipment and playing opportunities to those unable to afford the cost of participation. When aligned with its mission, Impact provides Fiscal Sponsor Projects (FSP) to community groups and individuals desiring to obtain financial or other support for their charitable projects through grants, or in order to receive tax-deductible donations from individuals and other contributors through the sponsor. FSP arrangements may range from a project or an organization included completely under Impact's 501(c)(3) umbrella to assistance to an organization establishing their own separate 501(c)(3) organization.Women's Impact (FSP) creates opportunities for women to connect while empowering each other to make a positive impact in their lives, families and communities. Their Facebook page (www.facebook.com/womensimpact) is an inspiring and supportive online community for women to connect and make an impact in each other's lives.Financial Literacy Initiative (FSP), established in 2017, provides financial literacy training to those who may not otherwise have access to such information. Promoting financial literacy through education regarding budgeting, home buying, insurance, investing, retirement planning and estate planning.Badges of Unity (FSP) works to unite all community members, build trusting relationships with at-risk youth, and partner with others to ensure a bright future for all. By working to strengthen current programs and connecting youth to after-school activities in their neighborhood, new non-traditional, after-school activities have been developed. These activities include a 6-week academy for youth to job shadow police officers and hosting "Fargo United" events in local parks with food, music and positive interactions with law enforcement. Higher Education Task Force (FSP) evaluated the governance structure of higher education in ND. This project engaged a consultant team to provide improvement options for the ND Higher Ed Governance structure. The report was completed in 2019. Par 4 Youth Golf (FSP) supports the PGA Junior League Golf by providing playing opportunities, equipment, and financial assistance to benefit those in need. Innovative ND Education (FSP) transforms the education of ND children K-12 by promoting creative, innovative, learner-centered schooling. Red River Market (FSP) organizes a weekly farmers' market in downtown Fargo to engage the community and provide entertainment, education, and healthy eating options. This project will be seeking its own 501(c)(3) status in the future. Sinner Bresnahan Healthy Kids Initiative (FSP) is a "grass-roots" program formed for the purposes of engaging the youth of Casselton, North Dakota, toward positive social relationships.Excite Music (FSP) that supports the mission to ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn and experience music, regardless of economic status. Excite Music offers student participants a variety of different ways to engage with music through free after-school music lessons and opportunity to attend local music schools.Task Force on Veterans Affairs (FSP) was created for the purpose of auditing the governance structure and services provided to veterans in North Dakota and identify areas improvement. Furniture Mission of the Red River Valley Fund (Donor Advised Fund) provides gently- used furniture and household items at no cost to people in crisis including, but not limited to, those who have suffered loss of their household belongings due to fire, storms, or flood or people starting a new life after homelessness, significant financial loss, abusive situations, or even incarceration. Additional Community Support:LevelUp Fargo is a community collaborative movement (Coalition) with a dynamic and significant group of key stakeholders that engage members across numerous sectors to address the need to reduce youth substance abuse. The Coalition was formed in August 2015, and a grant application was submitted to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in March 2016. On August 31, 2016, LevelUp Fargo was awarded a 5-year, $625,000 grant from SAMHSA ($125,000 a year for five years) with the opportunity to apply for five additional years at $125,000 per year. The Coalition submitted a 12-Month Action Plan to SAMHSA, which was approved and implemented. With the help of a marketing firm, LevelUp Fargo and Fargo Public Schools created a survey instrument administered to grades 6-12 to all Fargo Public Schools, Oak Grove Lutheran School, and JP II Catholic Schools. This survey, which is administered bi-annually, identifies current mental health needs, substance use trends, and provides a social capital index used to improve connectedness for Fargo youth. These results are then compiled into an actionable report and disseminated throughout the Fargo community.During 2019, Impact provided accounting support to the Red River Children's Advocacy Center (RRCAC) including processing weekly accounts payables, biweekly payroll management, general ledger and periodic financial statements, and coordinating the preparation of their annual Form 990.A veteran emergency charitable fund called Support Our Veterans (SOV), was established at Impact to receive charitable contributions from donors and to support the emergent needs of North Dakota veterans and their eligible dependents who are not covered under current federal or state programs. Since inception, the fund has generated over $380,999 in contributions and provided assistance to over 343 qualified veteran families.

GiveBack InitiativeIn 2006, Impact launched its GiveBack Initiative to inspire donors to substantially increase and improve the impact of their giving of time, talent, and treasure in North Dakota and western Minnesota communities. Grants from Dakota Medical Foundation, Alex Stern Family Foundation, Bush Foundation and various individual and corporate contributions, have provided the funding for this Initiative. Initiative strategies have focused on education and training for nonprofit organizations to becoming highly proficient fundraisers and to be more operationally efficient and effective. The initiative has developed new ways of thinking and approaches surrounding wealth transfer and volunteerism in North Dakota and Minnesota.North Dakota Wealth Transfer: The Foundations initially commissioned and funded a North Dakota wealth transfer study in 2005, conducted by the Center on Wealth and Philanthropy at Boston College in Boston, Massachusetts. Impact has distributed the North Dakota Wealth Transfer Study to donors, community leaders, nonprofit organizations, attorneys, accountants, financial advisors, banks, and trusted personnel in several North Dakota communities. Another North Dakota Wealth Transfer Report was commissioned by the Foundation in 2011, "Endless Possibilities on the Prairie: Unleashing North Dakota's Great Potential" 2007-2061, and associated data entitled "Communities with Possibilities". The new study concluded that through 2061 North Dakota households will give over $95 billion to charity and pay an estimated $39 billion in estate taxes. The supplement to Endless Possibilities is the first ever county level analysis of North Dakota wealth transfer. In 2012, Impact produced two educational videos about the North Dakota Wealth Transfer and the U.S. Wealth Transfer. The initiative's purpose is to provide valuable information to nonprofit organizations so that they can develop their fundraising to individuals, who provide eighty percent of the funding to U.S. nonprofits through private gifts.Regional Philanthropy Study: Impact commissioned the Regional High Impact Philanthropy Study in 2016 to gain a clearer view of why people in the region give money and time, how much they give, what motivates them, and several other issues related to philanthropy, estate planning and charitable contributions in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Dakota Medical Foundation and Alex Stern Family Foundation funded the effort. A team of North Dakota State University and University of North Dakota researchers developed and conducted the study. The philanthropy study complements "Endless Possibilities on the Prairie: Unleashing North Dakota's Great Potential," which provided an overview of wealth transfer and projected wealth transfer in North Dakota from 2007 to 2061. The philanthropy study data will help area charities strategically position themselves to be part of this projected wealth transfer and give donors more information about how they can deepen the impacts of their gifts. Impact has incorporated information and insights gained through the study into training materials and will continue to utilize this information in future training sessions with regional charities.GiveBack Website: The website (www.givingheartsday.org) is designed to provide a one-stop information resource for donors to conveniently locate, review, volunteer and make contributions to almost 500 nonprofit organizations in the region. Qualified nonprofit organizations in North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota are encouraged to place their organizational information on the website to easily connect with donors of time, talent and treasure. Donors are able to research and identify their favorite nonprofit organizations and to make contributions online using their credit card. Nonprofit organizations are able to utilize the website to receive contributions and promote their organization. Significant efforts and commitments have been made by Impact to enhance the website in order to better connect donors with nonprofit organizations that fit the donor's charitable goals. Since its 2007 implementation, the online giving website has processed over $39.2 million for its partner nonprofits. Impact implemented a Volunteer Initiative in 2007 designed to help nonprofit organizations more effectively recruit, train, manage and retain volunteers. The GiveBack website, www.givingheartsday.org, includes a Volunteer page that provides the capability for nonprofit organizations to list their volunteer opportunities. Impact partnered with FirstLink, an unrelated 501(c)(3) organization, to connect volunteers with opportunities to serve.Giving Hearts Day Initiative (GHD) Initiative: Impact partnered with Dakota Medical Foundation (DMF) to establish the GHD Initiative to build the fundraising capabilities of nonprofit organizations and promote charitable giving in the region. The online giving environment improves efficiency to raise funds for nonprofit programs serving the region. The online giving website at www.givingheartsday.org is used to promote the annual DMF Giving Hearts Day, each February, and provides donors with an easy-to-use website to make online contributions to almost 500 of their favorite North Dakota and Minnesota charitable organizations throughout the year. Since implementation in 2008, the GHD Initiative has generated nearly 248,000 contributions for community nonprofit organizations totaling over $71 million. DMF provided nearly $7 million in matching funds and incentive grants for participating organizations since inception of this initiative. The Giving Hearts Day event held in February 2019, generated 67,765 donations for 478 charitable causes totaling over $16.2 million in a 24-hour period. The participating nonprofit organizations obtained additional matching funds prior to the event. During 2019, Dakota Medical Foundation provided $577,209 in matching fund and incentive award grants to participating nonprofit organizations.
