OF THE 102,738 GRANT THAT WAS GIVEN, 50,000 WAS RESTRICTED BY THE SENSER FOUNDATION FOR THE "ISRAELI LOCAL AUTHORITIES LEADERSHIP GROUP, CREATING A MODEL SOCIETY" PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM IS MADE UP OF A GROUP OF 16 HAND- PICKED MAYORS AND CEOS OF CITIES AND TOWNS ACROSS ISRAEL AND HAVE 14 SCHEDULED THREE-HOUR SESSIONS. THE ISSUES THEY ARE ADDRESSING INCLUDE BRIDGING SOCIAL GAPS WITHIN THEIR COMMUNITIES, ESTABLISHING KEY VALUES WITH REGARD TO DECISION-MAKING, SETTING MORAL STANDARDS FOR MANAGING EMPLOYEES, LEARNING HOW TO PROMOTE COEXISTENCE IN A SPACE SHARED BY PEOPLE FROM DIFFERENT ETHNIC AND SOCIAL GROUPS, AND CREATING AN ETHICAL APPROACH TO RESOURCE DISTRIBUTION. MORE THAN A STUDY SEMINAR THAT MERELY PRESENTS PARTICIPANTS WITH THEORIES AND CONCEPTS, THE KOLOT PROGRAM OFFERS PRACTICAL INFORMATION AND TOOLS. THUS, THE YEAR-LONG COURSE WILL CULMINATE WITH A WEEKLONG EDUCATIONAL TOUR TO THE UNITED STATES, FOCUSING ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ISRAELI JEWS AND DIASPORA JEWS. THE TRIP WILL BE A WATERSHED EVENT FOR THE PARTICIPANTS, BOTH THOSE WHO ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE MOSAIC THAT IS NORTH AMERICAN JEWRY BUT WHO WILL NONETHELESS GAIN GREATER INSIGHT INTO IT, AND THOSE WHO WILL ENCOUNTER IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. DURING MEETINGS WITH OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF ISRAEL AND THE WORLD ZIONIST ORGANIZATION, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE EXPOSED TO THE CHALLENGES INHERENT IN THE DIASPORA JEWRY-ISRAEL RELATIONSHIP AND THE SIGNIFICANT ROLE THAT THEY, AS ISRAELI LEADERS, CAN PLAY IN CREATING POSITIVE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES. THIS TRIP WILL OFFER A SPACE IN WHICH THE PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE VARIOUS CONFLICTS WITHIN ISRAELI SOCIETY THAT SHAPE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ISRAELI AND DIASPORA JEWS. ALTHOUGH THE GROUP IS PROFESSIONALLY HOMOGENOUS, FACING SIMILAR CHALLENGES, THEY REPRESENT A TRUE CROSS-SECTION OF ISRAELI SOCIETY: MEN AND WOMEN, RELIGIOUS AND SECULAR, LEFT-WING AND RIGHT-WING. WHILE MOST OF THE PARTICIPANTS ARE JEWISH ISRAELI, THERE IS ONE DRUZE STUDENT IN THE GROUP. ALL OF THE PARTICIPANTS HOLD EXTREMELY SENIOR POSITIONS, ENTRUSTED WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF RUNNING A MUNICIPALITY, YET BEFORE THIS YEAR, MANY OF THEM HAD NEVER MET - LET ALONE HELD A SERIOUS CONVERSATION WITH - THE DIVERSITY OF PEOPLE THAT THEY HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOUNTER THROUGH KOLOT. |
