Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Program Service Expenses 0, Grants and allocations 0, Revenue 0 RESEARCH They are building the High Road to Racial Equity Addressing Implicit Bias in the San Francisco Bay Area Restaurant Industry. ROC is researching to reduce the impact of discrimination against people of color in the restaurant industry to increase their likelihood of gaining meaningful employment. The looming Recession will not stop restaurant growth but Could Hurt the Workforce. We have also been looking at Covid 19 in the restaurant, especially on low-wage restaurant workers. We believe that the industry will continue to thrive, but we are concerned that the new normal may decrease wages and increase workforce instability. The Gig is Up The New Gig Economy and the Threat of Subminimum Wages. Another set of concerns is that the gig has been expanding to the restaurant industry and reducing the number of previously stable jobs. State of Chicagos Tipped Restaurant Workers Brief The Differential Impact of the Subminimum Wage on Tipped Workers of Color
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d Program Service Expenses 714,283, Grants and allocations 0, Revenue 0 Full wage OFW increases for low-wage restaurant workers. INCREASED WAGES ROC United led Full Wage public education efforts in NY, DC, MI, and PAMI, to call for the elimination of the subminimum wage for tipped workers and the increase of the base minimum wage to at least 15/hour. In Michigan, we launched a We The People organizing process to invite hundreds of thousands of Michiganders to live room conversations, town hall meetings, community dinners, and teach-ins to openly discuss issues that unite people across the state. We also continued to work on the Tipped Worker Resource Center TWRC to provide lighter-touch support to states that do not have a ROC chapter office.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4a MEMBERSHIP continued Our Raise work also included technical assistance and training on racial equity, sexual harassment, and a diverse and inclusive workforce. To date, we have nearly 60,000 listed members and activated more than 500,000 restaurant workers across the country. On May 1, 2020, Senator Warren met with restaurant workers to celebrate International Workers Day and May Day. The conference and online rally, live-streamed on Zoom and Facebook, garnered more than 40,000 viewers and attendees and created hundreds of activities across all social media platforms. On June 18, 2020, Stacey Abrams met and spoke with ROC members and supporters about combating systemic racism and the restaurant industrys longstanding racial, economic, and gender inequalities in the industry. Six ROC members from different parts of the country introduced Abrams and addressed more than 15,000 ROC members at the virtual meeting. Pandemic assistance - ROC United managed to launch an unprecedented pandemic assistance program, which raised approximately 1.5 million and helped more than 5,000 restaurant workers nationwide.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4b Full wage OFW increases for low-wage restaurant workers continued CHANGING THE NARRATIVE SHIFT - Increasing wages to 15 for all workers faced an uphill battle compounded by the NRAs lobbying efforts. However, in 2020, ROC Uniteds programs were mentioned in more than 2,000 published stories nationwide-a herculean effort. ROC helped shift the narrative in the media and created changes in peoples attitude by raising awareness around wage increase to 15 per hour and elimination of subminimum wage. The rate of ROCs press visibility increased by 150 percent. Since February 2020, ROC has appeared more than ten times in five leading publications The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Daily News. ROC United has also been in major television networks NBC, CBS News, FOX News, and NPR stations.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4c POLICY continued ROC United joined the Paid Leave 4 All steering committee and expanded our paid leave efforts across the country. In California, ROC played a leading role in emergency paid sick leave legislation and supported paid leave expansion in New York. In PA, ROC played a leading role in adopting and implementing paid sick leave in Pittsburgh. In DC, ROC played a leading role in winning a 14 million Excluded Workers Fund for undocumented and other workers. Our education and advocacy led to paid sick leave at the national level in the Restaurant Recovery Act. ROC took the lead in calling for an Essential Workers Bill of Rights.
Form 990, Part III, Line 4d RESEARCH continued Building on our extensive work on racial equity, ROC partnered with the Seattle Office for Civil Rights to release The Great Service Divide Occupational Segregation, Inequality, and the Promise of a Living Wage in the Seattle Restaurant Industry. ROC also created a research fellowship program that supported the Behind the Kitchen Door project in Pittsburgh, including interviewing 30 restaurant employers and developed a National Research Panel of over 1000 restaurant workers with an initial project of surveying restaurant workers on their experience in the pandemic.
