THE VISION OF THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PITTSBURGH IS A THRIVING, VIBRANT, AND ENGAGED JEWISH COMMUNITY. IN ORDER TO ACCOMPLISH THIS VISION WE RAISE AND ALLOCATE FUNDS AND BUILD COMMUNITY LOCALLY, IN ISRAEL, AND AROUND THE WORLD. THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PITTSBURGH WILL BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE MOST BENEFIT TO OUR COMMUNITY ONLY IF WE ARE TRUE TO THE FOLLOWING CORE VALUES: 1. FINANCIAL RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT THE JEWISH FEDERATION ENGAGES A BROAD CROSS SECTION OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN RAISING AND DISTRIBUTING FUNDS. BY BRINGING A WEALTH OF VIEWPOINTS AND EXPERTISE TO THESE EFFORTS, WE WORK TO ENSURE THAT THE PROGRAMS AND INSTITUTIONS THAT ENRICH OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY REMAIN VIBRANT AND STRONG. THE JEWISH FEDERATION IS THE LARGEST JEWISH GRANT-MAKING ORGANIZATION IN OUR COMMUNITY, HELPING PEOPLE AT HOME, IN ISRAEL, AND AROUND THE WORLD. THE FEDERATION'S COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN (FORMERLY CALLED THE "ANNUAL CAMPAIGN") AND JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION EMBODY THE VALUES AND TRADITIONS OF OUR JEWISH COMMUNITY. IT SAYS THAT WE -- AS A COMMUNITY -- ADDRESS CRITICAL NEEDS TODAY AND POSITION OURSELVES TO MEET CHANGING NEEDS IN THE FUTURE. DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE FEDERATION HALTED ALL IN-PERSON MEETINGS AND EVENTS STARTING IN MARCH 2020. ALL EVENTS WERE RECONFIGURED AND MOVED ONLINE TO A VIRTUAL SPACE. WHILE THESE RESTRICTIONS LIMITED OUR ABILITY TO HAVE IN-PERSON CONNECTIONS, WE WERE STILL ABLE TO HOLD EVENTS THAT REACHED A LARGE SECTION OF OUR COMMUNITY, MANY OF WHOM WE DO NOT NORMALLY REACH. THESE EVENTS INCLUDE VIRTUAL YOUNG ADULT PROGRAMMING INCLUDING PRE-SHABBAT GATHERINGS; VIRTUAL GAME NIGHTS AND VIRTUAL MIXOLOGY LESSONS; A MONTHLY LION OF JUDAH ZOOM SERIES WITH JFNA; AND A NUMBER OF PARTNERED ONLINE EVENTS THAT WE COLLABORATED ON WITH OTHER ORGANIZATIONS, INCLUDING CLASSROOMS WITHOUT BORDERS AND THE HOLOCAUST CENTER OF PITTSBURGH. THE COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN CLOSED JUNE 15, 2020, THE EARLIEST AND FASTEST IN THE FEDERATION'S RECENT HISTORY. THANKS TO THE SUPPORT OF 3,014 DONORS, THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PITTSBURGH RAISED $13.6 MILLION FOR THE COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN. PARTICIPATION IN THE STATE'S EDUCATIONAL IMPROVEMENT TAX CREDIT PROGRAM SECURED $4.8 MILLION TO SUPPORT JEWISH DAY SCHOOLS AND PRESCHOOLS. THE JEWISH HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION (JHF) CONTRIBUTED A $900,000 BLOCK GRANT FOR SOCIAL SERVICES. ON OCT. 27, 2018, AN ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACKER MURDERED 11 PEOPLE AT THREE SYNAGOGUES IN THE TREE OF LIFE BUILDING IN PITTSBURGH'S SQUIRREL HILL NEIGHBORHOOD. AMIDST THE OUTSET OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC IN 2020, THE JEWISH FEDERATION CONTINUED OUR WORK TO HEAL THE COMMUNITY IN THE WAKE OF THIS HORRIFIC ATTACK. THE FEDERATION, WORKING WITH PARTNERS, HELPED TO SECURE A $3.9 MILLION GRANT FOR NINE PITTSBURGH-AREA ORGANIZATIONS DIRECTLY INVOLVED IN OCT. 27 RESPONSE, INCLUDING THE DOR HADASH, NEW LIGHT, AND TREE OF LIFE * OR L'SIMCHA CONGREGATIONS. THIS GRANT, FROM THE U.S. GOVERNMENT'S ANTI-TERRORISM AND EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM, ENSURES THAT OUR JEWISH INSTITUTIONS WILL RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT FOR ATTACK-RELATED EXPENSES AND THAT THE 10.27 HEALING PARTNERSHIP WILL HAVE FUNDING TO HELP HEAL THOSE STILL EXPERIENCING TRAUMA. THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC BROUGHT NEW THREATS TO JEWISH LIFE IN PITTSBURGH AND TO EVERY JEWISH COMMUNITY WORLDWIDE. JUST AS THE POWER OF UNRESTRICTED DOLLARS FROM THE COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN ENABLED THE JEWISH FEDERATION TO RESPOND IMMEDIATELY TO THE 2018 ATTACK, THE SAME FLEXIBLE FUNDING ALLOWED US TO RESPOND NIMBLY TO THE UNPRECEDENTED PANDEMIC. THE JEWISH FEDERATION'S EMERGENCY RELIEF SUBCOMMITTEE PROMPTLY REDIRECTED CAMPAIGN FUNDS. THE FEDERATION SECURED ADDITIONAL FUNDS FROM GENEROUS DONORS AND FOUNDATIONS TO MEET THE IMMEDIATE NEEDS OF LOCAL AGENCIES AND INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS. AS OF JUNE, THE FEDERATION SECURED MORE THAN $2 MILLION FOR COVID-RELATED RELIEF. AS OF JUNE 15, THE JEWISH FEDERATION HAD PROVIDED MORE THAN $1.1 MILLION TO HELP PEOPLE SUFFERING FROM THE PANDEMIC AND ITS CONSEQUENCES. THE JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION, WITH MORE THAN $267 MILLION IN ASSETS UNDER MANAGEMENT AT THE END OF 2019-20, ENCOMPASSES 1,463 INDIVIDUAL FOUNDATION FUNDS. THE FOUNDATION ADDED 71 NEW FUNDS THIS YEAR THAT BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY THROUGH TAX-EFFICIENT GIVING. THE JEWISH COMMUNITY FOUNDATION DISTRIBUTED MORE THAN $371,000 TO HELP ORGANIZATIONS MEET EMERGENT PANDEMIC-RELATED NEEDS, ENSURING THAT PITTSBURGH'S JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS COULD MAINTAIN ESSENTIAL OPERATIONS. THESE FUNDRAISING EFFORTS ENABLED DIVERSE PROJECTS. FOR EXAMPLE: - A $90,000 FOUNDATION GRANT WILL HELP PITTSBURGH'S JEWISH DAY SCHOOLS ADDRESS THE INCREASE IN MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS DUE TO THE ANTI-SEMITIC ATTACK OF OCT. 27, 2018, AND THE PANDEMIC. - THROUGH PARTNERSHIP WITH THE HAROLD GRINSPOON FOUNDATION'S LIFE & LEGACY (TM) PROGRAM, THE FOUNDATION HAS HELPED LOCAL JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS TO SECURE $26 MILLION IN PLANNED-GIVING COMMITMENTS. - CONTINUING FOUNDATION FUNDING WILL ALLOW FOUNDATION SCHOLAR RABBI DANNY SCHIFF TO PROVIDE CLASSES AND VIRTUAL JEWISH LEARNING, INCLUDING THE FLORENCE MELTON SCHOOL OF ADULT JEWISH LEARNING CURRICULUM. PLANNING AND COMMUNITY BUILDING THE JEWISH FEDERATION OF GREATER PITTSBURGH WORKED WITH OUR PARTNER AGENCIES IN PITTSBURGH AND OVERSEAS TO ENHANCE MANY PROGRAMS. NONE OF THESE ADVANCEMENTS WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF DONORS WHO GAVE TO THE JEWISH FEDERATION TO FUND THE FEDERATION'S PROGRAMS AS WELL AS PROGRAMS AT OUR BENEFICIARY AGENCIES. SOME OF THIS YEAR'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDED: - THE COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL HELPED CREATE THE 412 BLACK JEWISH COLLABORATIVE. THE COLLABORATIVE BRINGS TOGETHER YOUNG JEWISH AND YOUNG BLACK PROFESSIONALS TO ELEVATE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES IN PITTSBURGH. - FEDERATION PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTING REMEMBER REPAIR TOGETHER, THE ONE-YEAR COMMEMORATION OF THE OCT. 27, 2018, ATTACKS. INCLUDED IN THE COMMEMORATION WERE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES THAT DREW MORE THAN 1,000 VOLUNTEERS, OPPORTUNITIES FOR TORAH STUDY, AND A COMMUNITY GATHERING OF MORE THAN 2,500 COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND SUPPORTERS. - THE COMMUNITY SECURITY PROGRAM INSTALLED THE BLUEPOINT EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM IN THE THREE PITTSBURGH DAY SCHOOLS AND THE 14 EARLY LEARNING CENTERS. IN THE EVENT OF AN ACTIVE-SHOOTER SITUATION OR OTHER SECURITY THREAT, THE STATE-OF-THE-ART BLUEPOINT SYSTEM WOULD ALLOW IMMEDIATE NOTIFICATION OF POLICE AND COMMUNITY CONTACTS. - THE ISRAEL & OVERSEAS DEPARTMENT DOUBLED THE SIZE OF THE SHINSHINIM PROGRAM, WELCOMING FOUR 18-YEAR-OLD ISRAELI EMISSARIES, ALL FROM PITTSBURGH'S PARTNERSHIP2GETHER REGION OF KARMIEL/MISGAV. THIS YEAR'S SHINSHINIM CAME TO PITTSBURGH TO ENGAGE THE LOCAL COMMUNITY WITH ISRAEL, WORKING WITH MORE THAN 1,000 UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS. - THE IMPACT MEASUREMENT DEPARTMENT PUBLISHED "POINTS OF ENTRY: INTERFAITH FAMILIES IN PITTSBURGH," THE FIRST OF FIVE STUDIES TO FOLLOW UP ON THE 2017 GREATER PITTSBURGH JEWISH COMMUNITY STUDY. - IN OCTOBER 2019, THE HOLOCAUST CENTER OF PITTSBURGH COORDINATED THE PRESENTATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL EXHIBIT "LEST WE FORGET," BY LUIGI TOSCANO, ON THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH'S CATHEDRAL OF LEARNING LAWN. THIS EXHIBIT FEATURED LARGE-SCALE PHOTOGRAPHS OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVORS, INCLUDING 16 NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN PORTRAITS OF PITTSBURGH-BASED SURVIVORS. - THE VOLUNTEER CENTER COLLABORATED WITH COMMUNITY DAY SCHOOL TO PLAN VOLUNTEER PROJECTS FOR 275 STUDENTS AS PART OF THEIR MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY ACTIVITIES. |
