CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP: JAN. 5, 2020 - OUR 16TH ANNUAL WEEKEND CHAMBER MUSIC WORKSHOP AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI WAS HELD ON THE WEEKEND OF JAN. 3-5,ENDING WITH A PUBLIC RECITAL IN CLARKE HALL AT THE UM SCHOOL OF MUSIC ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, JAN. 5TH,, WHERE ALL SEVEN CHAMBER GROUPS DEMONSTRATED THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. FOUR OF THE WORKSHOP ATTENDEES WERE HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS. ATTENDANCE WAS 75, INCLUDING SEVERAL SIBLINGS AND FRIENDS OF OUR YOUNG PERFORMERS.

THE SOLO INTERLUDES WERE BRACKETED BY FAMILIAR ORCHESTRAL SHOWPIECES BY BRAHMS, MENDELSSOHN AND GRIEG, FOR A NICE VARIETY. AN AUDIENCE OF 385 ATTENDED.

CONCERTS FOR COMMUNITY: SEPT. 5, 2019 - A STRING TRIO (VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO) VISITED WEST HIALEAH GARDENS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, 11990 NW 92ND AVENUE, HIALEAH GARDENS, AT THE INVITATION OF MUSIC TEACHER CRYSTAL SAWYER, TO PERFORM TWO THIRTY-MINUTE PROGRAMS. THERE WERE 180 K-2 STUDENTS AND 195 FIFTH GRADERS, TOTAL 375 STUDENTS AND 21 ADULTS. THE MUSICIANS SPOKE ABOUT THEIR INSTRUMENTS AND THEIR CAREERS IN MUSIC, TOOK QUESTIONS FROM STUDENTS, AND PLAYED A SELECTION OF SHORT POPULAR AND CLASSICAL PIECES. OCT. 6, 2019 - THE FULL ORCHESTRA PERFORMED HISPANIC HERITAGE, A CONCERT OF SPANISH AND SPANISH-INFLUENCED MUSIC INCLUDING BIZETS CARMEN SUITES, EL AMOR BRUJO BY DEFALLA, RODRIGOS LYRICAL CONCIERTO DE ARANJUEZ WITH GUITAR SOLOIST RAFAEL PADRON (GUITAR PROFESSOR AT UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI), AND THE DANZON 2 BY MARQUEZ AS THE CONCLUDING PIECE. THE EVENT TOOK PLACE AT 7:30 PM IN THE FIU WERTHEIM AUDITORIUM, 10910 SW 17TH STREET, MIAMI 33199. IT WAS A NOVEL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE FIU SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND OUR COMMUNITY ORCHESTRA, CO-PRESENTED BY BOTH ORGANIZATIONS, WITH ALL PROCEEDS DESIGNATED FOR MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS. AN AUDIENCE OF 520 ENJOYED THE CONCERT, AS SHOWN BY REPEATED CURTAIN CALLS FOR ORCHESTRA, CONDUCTOR AND SOLOIST. WE HAD ABOUT 130 YOUTHS UNDER 18, AND SEVERAL RETIREMENT HOMES ATTENDED. OCT. 27, 2019 - THE ALHAMBRA ORCHESTRA, SIDE BY SIDE WITH GREATER MIAMI YOUTH SYMPHONY, PRESENTED SPOOKY SYMPHONY, A FREE HALLOWEE EVENT FOR CHILDREN AND FAMILIES, SPONSORED BY THE CHILDRENS TRUST IN THE 2300-SEAT MIAMI DADE COUNTY AUDITORIUM, 2901 WEST FLAGLER STREET, MIAMI 33135. THIS CHILD-FRIENDLY ONE-HOUR PRESENTATION, AT 4 PM, FEATURED A HUGE COMBINED ORCHESTRA BACKED BY A VIDEO SCREEN SHOWING IMAGES COORDINATED WITH THE MUSIC. THE ORCHESTRAS PERFORMED EXCERPTS FROM EL AMOR BRUJO BY M. DEFALLA, MOVIE THEMES FROM FROZEN AND WONDER WOMAN, A VIDEOGAME SUITE, GRIEGS IN THE HALL OF THE MOUNTAIN KING, AND IN CONCLUSION, AN ABBREVIATED VERSION OF THE TCHAIKOVSKY 1812 OVERTURE WITH VIRTUAL AND ORCHESTRAL FIREWORKS. THE CONDUCTORS OF THE TWO ORCHESTRAS, WHO ALTERNATED DUTIES, WERE ALSO COSTUMED, AS WERE MANY OF THE MUSICIANS. AN AUDIENCE OF 1579, MANY IN THEIR OWN HALLOWEEN COSTUMES, ENJOYED THE SHOW. 880 WERE ADULTS. NOVEMBER 9, 2019 TWO CHAMBER GROUPS OF ORCHESTRA MEMBERS PERFORMED A FREE RECITAL AT THE CORAL GABLES LIBRARY, 3443 SEGOVIA STREET, CORAL GABLES, 33134. ONE GROUP PRESENTED BEETHOVENS QUINTET FOR PIANO AND WINDS, WHILE THE OTHER PERFORMED A SCHUBERT STRING QUARTET. AN AUDIENCE OF 45 ENJOYED THE PRESENTATION. NOV. 23, 2019 - ITS A KAZOO OUT THERE WAS A LIVELY CHILDRENS CONCERT, GIVEN AT 3 PM ON SATURDAY, NOV. 23RD IN PINECREST GARDENS, 11000 SW 57TH AVENUE, PINECREST 33156. THE ORCHESTRA PLAYED MOVIE THEMES FROM FROZEN AND WONDER WOMAN; AN IMAGINATIVE PIECE ABOUT A JUNIOR WIZARD CALLED PERFECT POTIONS, BY A LOCAL COMPOSER; ROBERT MEYERS HUMOROUS ONE BOW CONCERTO, IN WHICH THREE STRING SOLOISTS MUST PASS A SINGLE BOW AMONG THEM; AND A RARELY SEEN PIECE BY JUSTIN LOCKE CALLED CONCERTO FOR KAZOO AND FAMOUS CELLIST, THE STORY OF A TIMID KAZOO WHO LEARNS TO PLAY SOME CLASSICAL MUSIC WITH HIS NEW FRIEND (PLAYED BY FIU CELLO PROFESSOR JASON CALLOWAY), AS WELL AS LEARNING ABOUT COURAGE, PERSISTENCE AND HOW TO EARN RESPECT. AT THE CONCLUSION, KAZOOS WERE PASSED OUT TO CHILDREN IN THE AUDIENCE AND EVERYONE PLAYED A SONG TOGETHER. THE PIECE PROVIDES A CLEVER INTRODUCTION TO THE ORCHESTRA, AND A SHOWCASE FOR A SOLO CELLIST AS WELL. THE AUDIENCE FOR THIS FREE EVENT, CO-SPONSORED BY PINECREST GARDENS, WAS 245, INCLUDING A LOT OF TODDLERS AND YOUNG CHILDREN WHO ENTHUSIASTICALLY EMBRACED THE OPPORTUNITY TO PLAY KAZOOS (WHICH WERE GIVEN TO THEM) ALONG WITH THE ORCHESTRA MEMBERS. DEC. 8, 2019 - OUR ELECTRIC STRINGS ENSEMBLE ALHAMBRA AMPED PERFORMED A ONE-HOUR PROGRAM OF CLASSIC ROCK AND HOLIDAY TUNES IN THE AUDITORIUM OF THE CORAL GABLES LIBRARY, 3443 SEGOVIA STREET, CORAL GABLES, AT 3 PM. LIBRARY PATRONS CAME IN AND OUT DURING THE PERFORMANCE, FOR A TOTAL OF 32 LISTENERS INCLUDING SEVERAL CHILDREN. DEC. 15, 2019 - OUR ELECTRIC STRINGS ENSEMBLE ALHAMBRA AMPED JOINED PINECREST GARDENS NIGHTS OF LIGHTS FESTIVAL WITH A ONE-HOUR PERFORMANCE OF JAZZY AND TRADITIONAL HOLIDAY TUNES AT 7 PM, FOR AN APPRECIATIVE AND ENTHUSIASTIC FAMILY AUDIENCE OF 220. FEB. 14, 2020 - THE ALHAMBRA QUARTET, OUR IN-HOUSE STRING QUARTET, PERFORMED FOR 90 MINUTES IN THE LOBBY OF MIAMI CANCER CENTER FOR MCIS MONTHLY EXHIBITION, WITH A REPERTOIRE OF LIGHT CLASSICAL AND POPULAR WORKS. APPROXIMATELY 180 PATIENTS AND STAFF HEARD THE PERFORMANCE. MARCH 8, 2020- A CHORD-IAL EVENING - 39 ORCHESTRA MEMBERS PRESENTED A FREE PROGRAM OF VARIED CHAMBER MUSIC FOR GROUPS RANGING FROM 4 TO 19 PLAYERS, IN CORAL GABLES CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH, IINCLUDING WORKS OF BEETHOVEN, IVES, BACH, VIVALDI, GLINKA AND TCHAIKOVSKY. THE GROUPS INCLUDED A BRASS QUINTET, A WIND AND PIANO QUINTET, A STRING QUINTET, A STRING AND PIANO SEXTET, A STRING SEXTET, AND THREE SMALL CHAMBER ORCHESTRAS. DESPITE THE CORONAVIRUS SCARE HEAVILY PUBLICIZED OVER THAT WEEKEND, A VERY APPRECIATIVE AUDIENCE OF 395 CAME TO HEAR THIS INTERESTING REPERTOIRE, MUCH OF IT RARELY HEARD IN LIVE PERFORMANCE.
