RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION: THE ANDERSON CABOT CENTER FOR OCEAN LIFE (ANDERSON CABOT CENTER") AT THE NEW ENGLAND AQUARIUM ("AQUARIUM") CONDUCTS "APPLIED" RESEARCH TO BETTER UNDERSTAND AND HELP REDUCE THE IMPACTS OF OCEAN INDUSTRY USE AND CLIMATE CHANGE ON OCEAN SPECIES AND HABITATS. THIS INVOLVES VARIOUS TOOLS INCLUDING VISUAL SURVEYS FROM THE WATER AND THE SKY, THE USE OF MODERN ELECTRONIC TAGGING TECHNOLOGIES, NON-INVASIVE SAMPLING TOOLS, AND MATHEMATICAL ANALYSES TO FILL CRITICAL GAPS IN OUR UNDERSTANDING OF THE MOST IMPORTANT AND VULNERABLE OCEAN SPECIES. THIS INFORMATION THEN DIRECTLY INFORMS MANAGEMENT AND OCEAN POLICY, AND HELPS DRIVE SOLUTIONS TO PROTECT THESE KEY SPECIES.IN 2020, THE ANDERSON CABOT CENTER MADE GREAT PROGRESS AROUND ITS OCEAN SCIENCE AND CONSERVATION PRIORITIES. SPECIFICALLY, WE FOCUSED ON CONDUCTING CUTTING-EDGE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH TO FILL DATA-GAPS ON HOW TO MANAGE AND MITIGATE NEGATIVE IMPACTS FROM INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES (E.G. COMMERCIAL FISHING, OFFSHORE RENEWABLES) ON VULNERABLE OCEAN SPECIES AND HABITATS. WE ALSO FOCUSED EXTENSIVELY ON DEVELOPING OUR ROLE IN THE GROWING "BLUE TECHNOLOGY" MOVEMENT/SECTOR (SEE BELOW).SELECT NOTABLE HIGHLIGHTS- IN JUNE, THE AQUARIUM OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED ITS BLUE TECHNOLOGY INCUBATOR, BLUESWELL, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE BENEFIT CORPORATION SEA AHEAD. THE LAUNCH GENERATED SIGNIFICANT MEDIA COVERAGE, INCLUDING A PIECE IN BUSINESS INSIDER. THIS PROGRAM, PHYSICALLY BASED IN THE CAMBRIDGE INNOVATION CENTER, AIMS TO CATALYZE EARLY STAGE BLUE TECHNOLOGY START-UPS AND VENTURES BY PROVIDING BUSINESS, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY MENTORSHIP AND RESOURCES OVER THE COURSE OF A 5-MONTH CURRICULUM, AS WELL AS NON-DILUTIVE FUNDING IN THE WAY OF A $35,000 GRANT (PER START-UP). COHORT 1 OF THE PROGRAM, CONSISTING OF SIX START-UPS, STARTED IN NOVEMBER AND WAS IN MID-STREAM AT THE CONCLUSION OF 2020. - THE ANDERSON CABOT CENTER ESTABLISHED FORMAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH TWO CORPORATIONS IN THE OFFSHORE RENEWABLE SECTOR, EQUINOR AND ORSTED, TO CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH IN THEIR OFFSHORE LEASE AREAS IN FEDERAL WATERS OFF OF SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND. THIS EXTENDS LONG STANDING WORK BY THE ANDERSON CABOT CENTER CONDUCTING AERIAL AND BOAT-BASED SURVEYS AND RESEARCH STUDIES TRACKING THE OCCURRENCE AND MOVEMENT OF OCEAN SPECIES (E.G. NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALES, SHARKS AND SEA TURTLES) IN AND AROUND THE FUTURE WIND TURBINE SITES.- THE ANDERSON CABOT CENTER'S MARINE CONSERVATION ACTION FUND PROVIDED MICRO-GRANTS TO SEVERAL OCEAN CONSERVATION PRACTITIONERS/RESEARCHERS AROUND THE GLOBE WHOSE ENTERPRISES WERE STRUGGLING WITH FISCAL AND/OR OPERATIONAL CONSTRAINTS DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. THESE INCLUDED EMERGENCY FUNDING FOR AFRICAN MANATEE RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION (AFRICAN AQUATIC CONSERVATION FUND), AND SEA TURTLE PROTECTION OPERATIONS (ASOCIACIN LATIN AMERICAN SEA TURTLES, COSTA RICA).- ANDERSON CABOT CENTER AND ADDITIONAL AQUARIUM STAFF PUBLISHED 34 PEER-REVIEWED PAPERS/CHAPTERS IN SCHOLARLY JOURNALS/BOOKS IN 2020.
