STATEMENT OF PROGRAM SERVICE ACCOMPLISHMENTS HISTORY AND ORGANIZATION IN 1925, JAMES B. DUKE WILLED $4 MILLION TO ESTABLISH DUKE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL AND ITS MEDICAL SCHOOL TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE IN THE CAROLINAS, THEN A POOR REGION LACKING HOSPITALS AND HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. DUKE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL HAS GROWN TO BE RECOGNIZED AS ONE OF THE WORLD'S GREAT HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS. IN 1998 AND CONCURRENT WITH ACQUIRING CONTROL OF TWO LOCAL COMMUNITY HOSPITALS, THE DUKE UNIVERSITY BOARD OF TRUSTEES ESTABLISHED DUKE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL AS THE FLAGSHIP OF THE NEWLY INCORPORATED DUKE UNIVERSITY HEALTH SYSTEM, INC.
