OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Programming (Continued)In June 2021, Cal Shakes launched its Audience Circle, a new membership program intended to build a year-round audience for an expansive, diverse spectrum of programming at Cal Shakes as well as to provide sustainable revenue for the organization.Cal Shakes was thrilled to return to producing its own live, in-person work in fall 2021 with Shakespeares The Winters Tale adapted by Eric Ting and Philippa Kelly, directed by Eric Ting, and featuring an all-local creative team and acting ensemble. Offering humor, healing, and recognition of our collective loss, Cal Shakes The Winters Tale issued a joyful invitation to be together once again. Cal Shakes production of The Winters Tale received uniformly rave reviews, with 8 sold-out performances and a week-long extension. The organization continued to support other programs disrupted by the pandemic. Though Cal Shakes has had to indefinitely postpone the production of 1001 Nights - a Retelling, (a Cal Shakes commission co-conceived and co-written by Leila Buck and Evren Odckin), it will continue to support the Shahrazad Squad. Led by Raeshma Razvi and supported by a grant from the Doris Duke Foundation For Islamic Art, the Squad works to foster community resilience for MENASA women in the San Francisco Bay Area; sister cities in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio; and internationally.
