THE SCHOOL AND ITS FACULTY ARE MEMBERS OF: NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (NAIS) PALMETTO ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (PAIS) SOUTH CAROLINA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL ASSOCIATION (SCISA) SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGES AND SCHOOLS (SACS) SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION OF INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS (SAIS) TRI-COUNTY ADMISSIONS COUNCIL (TCAC) PROJECT-BASED LEARNING AT CCS IN A NORMAL DAY AT CHARLESTON COLLEGIATE SCHOOL, STUDENTS WILL EXPLORE REAL-WORLD PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES USING CREATIVE THINKING, NON-ROUTINE PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS, AND TEAMWORK. FROM A SECOND GRADE STUDENT WRITING BUSINESS PROPOSALS FOR SELLING THEIR GARDEN PRODUCE AT THE LOCAL FARMERS MARKET, DONATING THEIR EARNINGS TO A LOCAL NON-PROFIT, TO A HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE TACKLING THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION OF HOW A LANGSTON HUGHES POEM CONNECTS TO HIS OWN LIFE AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE WORLD, OUR STUDENTS ARE CREATING A DEEPER AND MORE MEANINGFUL UNDERSTANDING OF THE SUBJECT MATTER AND THE WORLD AROUND THEM. ONE OF THE MOST PROMISING TRENDS IN EDUCATION TODAY IS KNOWN AS PROJECT BASED LEARNING. THIS APPROACH MAINTAINS ACADEMIC RIGOR WHILE ALSO FOCUSING ON HIGH LEVELS OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND DEEPER LEARNING CONCEPTS. THIS METHODOLOGY CHALLENGES THE TRADITIONAL NOTION OF HOW MATERIAL IS PRESENTED AND CHALLENGES HOW WE KNOW IF STUDENTS HAVE LEARNED THE MATERIAL. INSTEAD OF A TEACHER RUSHING TO TRY AND COVER MULTIPLE TOPICS, LEADING TO POOR RETENTION RATES, TEACHERS USING A PROJECT-BASED LEARNING APPROACH FOCUS ON STUDENTS MASTERY OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPICS. BY SPENDING MORE TIME ON CAREFULLY SELECTED TOPICS, TEACHERS CAN ALLOW STUDENTS GREATER CHOICE AND GIVE THEM THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRACTICE ADDITIONAL SKILLS LIKE COLLABORATION AND PRESENTATIONS SKILLS. OUTDOOR EDUCATION THE OUTDOOR EDUCATION PILLAR AT CCS STRIVES TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH HANDS-ON OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN RISK MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS, EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION SKILLS, GROUP DYNAMICS, AND SURVIVAL SKILLS IN AN OUTDOOR CLASSROOM SETTING. COURSES IN THESE AREAS ARE DESIGNED TO ENHANCE HOW STUDENTS COLLABORATE SOCIALLY AND IN OTHER AREAS OF ACADEMICS THROUGHOUT THEIR DAILY LIVES. CHARLESTON COLLEGIATE SCHOOLS OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM SERVES STUDENTS OF ALL GRADE LEVELS AND AIMS TO INCREASE AWARENESS OF HOW WE IMPACT ONE ANOTHERS LIVES AND THE EFFECT WE HAVE ON OUR ENVIRONMENT. THE IMMEDIATE GOALS OF THIS PROGRAM ARE RECONNECTING PEOPLE WITH THEIR NATURAL SURROUNDINGS AND WITH ONE ANOTHER, WHILE CULTIVATING "SOFT SKILLS" SUCH AS CONFIDENCE, LEADERSHIP, COMMUNICATION AND COLLABORATION. THESE GOALS ARE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH AN EXPERIENTIAL AND HANDS-ON APPROACH TO LEARNING, UTILIZING ELEMENTS IN OUR LOW/HIGH ROPES COURSE AND NATURE TRAILS, ALONG WITH ACTIVITIES INVOLVING OUR OBSERVATION BEE HIVE. STUDENTS ACQUIRE KNOWLEDGE THROUGH PARTICIPATION, DISCUSSION, QUESTIONING, AND IMMERSION IN THE TOPICS BEING COVERED.
