OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: We fully funded 2 fellowships of a MISS member with Love the Oceans Nonprofit OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: We fully funded 4 fellowships with the Oceans Research Institute in South Africa OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Diversifying Ocean Sciences: The purpose of the program is to provide folks with a stepping stone into marine science who are otherwise struggling to break into the field. Diversifying Ocean Sciences is a free, year-long hybrid program for people to hone their ocean science skills, build their network, and receive mentorship. Thirty participants will be accepted into the program with sixteen coming from the Barancik Foundation's target communities (Florida and the greater Chicago area) and fourteen coming from all over. Participants will have the opportunity to participate in one of three concentrations (Field Ecology, Laboratory Techniques or Marine Technology) with ten students under each concentration. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: Summer Camp: The MISS Sleep Away Summer Camp is a FREE marine science program intended to provide accessible science experiences for teens 13-17 from historically excluded groups in STEM including: gender minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people from low income or underserved communities. Housing, snacks + meals, and transportation* will be provided to participants. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 8: Spring Break Camp: We're partnering with FUNducation and USF Sarasota-Manatee to host a FREE STEM Spring Break Camp intended to provide accessible science experiences for middle schoolers from historically excluded groups in STEM including: gender minorities, racial/ethnic minorities, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people from low income or underserved communities. Lunch, snacks and transportation will be provided.Participants will get to experience a broad range of STEM fields including Chemistry, Environmental Science and Engineering. They will also have the opportunity to complete their own project and present it for their friends, family and community members at the end of the week. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 9: Rising Tides Mentorship Program: This program is for MISS Members who are interested in mentoring another MISS Member either remotely, in their lab or at their institution. Mentors can be at any career stage (Undergraduate to Late-career), but must be mentoring someone in an earlier career stage (High School to Mid-career). This program will include a $2,000 mentor stipend, $5,000 student stipend and $3,000 for supplies and/or conference fees for mentorship pairs to work together for one year on a research project. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 10: Science at the Sea Youth Program: This program is FREE and open to middle and high school students of color (Black, Latino, Indigenous and Native Pacific Islander) or students from Title I schools who don't have access to a school science fair that are interested in conducting either a group or individual project for science fair.Transportation is available for participants and dinner will be provided at each meeting. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 11: Gill Guardians: This is an online free learning tool for students K thru Grey to sign up for a take online classes about sharks OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 12: PoSea Conference: An online conference to highlight the research accomplishments of people of color in marine science fields OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 13: Regional Meetings: 4 regional meetings around the US for MISS members to attend and meet other MISS members. We fully fund their travel, housing, and food. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 14: Eugenie Clark fellowship: Participants spend 4 months doing shark research with partner organizations. We pay their stipend, travel, and food, as well as cover additional expenses with partner organizations. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 15: Travel and Housing Awards for conferences: We pay for MISS members to attend research conferences. We pay for housing, food, and travel. |
