What is the organization's primary exempt purpose? The Sauvie Island Center seeks to equitably educate learners of all ages about food, farming and the land. Our place-based, hands-on educational programs, which include summer camps, farm field trips, school visits and community farm days, celebrate the connections between the food we eat, farms and the environment.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.
28 Calendar year 2022 saw the Sauvie Island Center return to a regular schedule of programming. Between April and November of 2022 SIC hosted approximately 935 students for farm field trips, summer camps and family farm days.

29 - In July of 2022 Sauvie Island Center (SIC) was awarded its first ever federal grant. Funds from US Dept. Of Agriculture Farm to School division, along with awards from East Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District and West Multnomah Soil & Water Conservation District, allowed SIC to offer 26 of its 30 2022 farm field trips as full scholarships to Title 1 schools. During field trips students rotate through three 45-minute lessons designed to support Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). These guidelines support specific learning outcomes required by the State of Oregon. Students also tasted, and took home, a variety of the same fruits and vegetables that they saw growing on the farm.

30 - The Sauvie Island Center continued its partnership with Portland State Universitys Capstone program. Starting in April of 2022 and ending in December of 2022, SIC co-taught a service-learning Capstone which covered food systems and their impact on BIPOC and under-served communities. Approximately 30 students participated in training on, then teaching, SICs curriculum to elementary school students. Education staff members from SIC shadowed Capstone students, met with them regularly to go over performance and conducted end of season evaluations.

- The Center hosted four weeks of farm camp for approximately 100 students. Two weeks of camp were offered on a sliding scale, with more than half of enrollees paying a no/low fee for 30 hours of farm-based instruction and recreation. During their time on the farm campers spent each of their five days focusing on SICs five-part NGSS aligned curriculum: pollinators, soil health, plant parts, plant life cycles and the food web.

- In 2022 SIC continued its efforts to expand the organizations cultural competency. Staff participated in a variety of professional development training sessions on topics ranging from trauma informed care to honoring diversity and inclusion in kids gardening. The curricula and assessments were also updated to remove language barriers for ESL students and better support critical thinking and reasoning, which is a core tenant of Next Generation Science Standards
