Expenses
(Required for section 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) organizations; optional for others.)
What is the organization's primary exempt purpose?
To foster appreciation and knowledge of birds and other native wildlife, to protect and restore wildlife populations and their habitats, and to promote sustainable use of natural resources.
Describe the organization’s program service accomplishments for each of its three largest program services, as measured by expenses. In a clear and concise manner, describe the services provided, the number of persons benefited, and other relevant information for each program title.

We are proud to highlight the successes of our two key programs: Conservation and Education. CONSERVATION: (1) Financial Support for Wildlife Protection: Each year, we donate to nonprofit organizations to aid in wildlife protection and land preservation. This year, our donation of a Purple Martin gourd system to Sweetwater Wetlands Park resulted in the successful fledging of Purple Martins for the first time. (2) We proudly continue our support to the conservation of threatened Southeastern American Kestrels through our successful nest box program. By strategically placing and maintaining nest boxes in proven environments, we support essential habitats for these falcons. This season, we partnered with the Avian Research and Conservation Institute (ARCI) to enhance our efforts by tagging fledglings with transmitters. These transmitters track their routes and favored habitats, providing invaluable data. This information helps us identify new nesting areas and contributes to the critical research needed to understand and protect this remarkable falcon species. (3) Influential Public Commentary: AAS was invited to provide public commentary at the North Florida Highlands State Parks Advisory Committee meeting regarding their 10-year management plan. (4) National Heritage Area Stakeholder: The Florida Springs Institute recognized AAS as a key stakeholder in an initiative to designate the springs region as a national heritage area.

EDUCATION: (1) Bird Banding Lab: Since 2019, our bird banding lab, staffed by AAS volunteers and college interns, has been collecting scientific data. We have trained ten university students through our semester-long internship program, with interns also receiving scholarships. (2) Beginning Birder Classes: We continue to offer four 4-week Beginning Birder classes at Santa Fe College, fostering a love for birdwatching in the community. (3) Educational Field Trips: We provide weekly field trips at Sweetwater Wetlands Parks and weekend field trips from September to May, educating the public about local birdlife. (4) School Programs and Environmental Education: Our active education program extends to elementary and middle schools. This year, we funded transportation for over 200 4th graders to nature parks for hands-on environmental education. Through these two programs, the Alachua Audubon Society remains committed to advancing conservation efforts and educating the next generation about the importance of wildlife and environmental stewardship.
