2) One big problem: our media is uncritically enamored of "intelligence officials." They report and then re-report on leaked, summarized, or vague "intelligence assessments". Readers don't know who or on what grounds those assessments are made.
3) During my 7 years as an intel officer, I saw some intel that was indeed precise (usually when different disciplines, like SIGINT & HUMINT, worked together). But I also saw a lot of vague “assessments” poorly written by “officials” whose work was no better than open sources.
4) Yet intel is secret, so we tend to stand in awe of it. As JFK once said, he wouldn’t hesitate to overrule someone talking about the minimum wage, “But you always assume that the military and intelligence people have some secret skill not available to ordinary mortals.”
5) Political opportunists, in Congress and the media, exploit this dynamic when they irresponsibly tweet fragments of “intel assessments.” Cable news handsomely pays former senior officials to comment on assessments without reading the underlying reports/sourcing.
