The events in Indianapolis took four Sikh Americans from their families and communities. This senseless attack is made even more devastating during the same month as the treasured Sikh holiday, Vaisakhi. My heart breaks for all who are grieving from this attack.

But, we can’t let the events in Indianapolis distract us from the significance of Sikh Awareness & Appreciation Month. Sikh Americans invented fiber optics, built our railroad system, & defended America overseas. They have made countless contributions to American society.

This month also offers us a chance to better understand the challenges they face every day, like hate crimes, bias, & a lack of understanding about their faith & religious documents. In New York City alone, 41% of Sikh Americans have reported verbal assault due to their religion.
