THREAD: During this partial government shutdown, the #FDA is able to continue activities involving the safety of human life. As such, we continue important work related to the importation of products we regulate....

This includes: Entry review of all products to determine the potential risk to health (for example, to determine whether the product poses an imminent threat to health/life). It also encompasses examination - including sampling - of products that may pose a high risk to health...

Also included: Detention of product, including products subject to detention without physical examination, if product may pose a high risk to health. And Mail Facility operations; examination of packages to detect counterfeit and other products that may pose high risk to health.

THREAD: I'm deeply concerned that kids use of e-cigs is accelerating, and we could see sharp rises in middle and high school use of e-cigs in 2019, on top of the 78% increase in teen use 2018; even despite interventions we’ve already taken and more steps we’ll soon implement. 1/5

I’m writing CEOs of e-cig manufacturers asking them to meet to discuss commitments they made last month, and why some are changing course. This is an urgent matter. We're at a critical juncture. The opportunity for harm reduction for adults could be lost for a generation. 3/5

The #FDA continues to conduct our own inquiries and/or investigations of e-cig makers related to marketing activities and other product-related issues. I'll be reaching out to CEOs to schedule new meetings. Manufacturers and management are accountable for the youth epidemic. 5/5
