SHUTDOWN UPDATE: We’ve been recalling inspectors to perform critical, high risk food safety inspections. We’ve been asked how many dedicated colleagues are currently working on these unpaid assignments. More people are on the way. Here’s a current snapshot of our field resources:

In addition, at #FDA’s Office of Import and Enforcement Operations, which cover International Mail Facilities and ports of entry, we have about 450 FDA staff in the field - including investigators, compliance experts and supervisors - supporting these critical safety operations

So far we’ve called back about 100 investigators and 35 supervisors to conduct and support domestic food surveillance inspections of high risk products. These professionals are in addition to FDA staff who were already working high-risk inspections, like foreign food assignments.

More staff could be on the way depending on needs. This is a snapshot of some of our current inspection work on high-risk assignments. Taken together, it's smaller than our usual footprint. But we’re targeting the riskiest products to make sure that Americans remain protected.

Update on #FDA's Inspectors #OnTheJob: In response to questions; our Office of Human and Animal Food Operations has more than 200 food investigators (not counting support staff and supervisors) out of about 550 total professionals when the agency is fully operational.

@SarahSorscherDC For Office of Import and Enforcement Operations we have about 450 out of 750. For Office of Human and Animal Food Operations I need to tally it this week but over 200 investigators (not counting support staff, supervisory, etc) out of about 550. Rough numbers and they fluctuate.

@SarahSorscherDC We'll get some updates out soon. As you know, they need to be scheduled, so the number will grow over a period of a few weeks until we get to some kind of a steady state.

We're deeply grateful for the #FDA professional staff that continue to carry on this mission unpaid, while also incurring expenses on their personal government credit cards for travel. We're doing everything we can to support them as they protect American consumers.
