Latest #FluView: Flu activity remains elevated nationally with most of the country reporting widespread geographic #flu. CDC expects significant flu activity to continue for weeks. It's not too late to get a flu vaccine. #VaccinesWork https://t.co/DXigR8I49V

I still believe e-cigs offer an opportunity for currently addicted adult smokers to transition off cigarettes and onto products that may not have the same level of risks. But if youth use continues to rise, the entire category faces an existential threat https://t.co/1wwEuP6Ld7

I believe if every currently addicted adult smoker switched completely to e-cigs it would provide a tremendous public health gain. But that opportunity is in significant risk if kids use continues to rise. There’s an opportunity now for responsible parties to address youth use.

We urge patients to speak with their pharmacists and health care providers to confirm that their product is actually affected by the recall. FDA has resources via @FDA_Drug_Info for consumers and HCPs. Visit our ARB recall website https://t.co/HZb3YT0060

#FDA issued a new voluntary recall of certain lots of irbesartan-containing drugs distributed by Solco Healthcare due to trace amounts of NDEA. https://t.co/HZb3YT0060 We continue to investigate impurities found in ARB class. We’ll share more soon about our ongoing work soon.

Most of the “vaccine hesitancy” isn’t born of peoples’ political persuasions but the result of poorly informed fears around putting any medical product into an otherwise healthy child. To counter, we can’t make this political. We must educate with science. https://t.co/HjGBKYbJ6l

SHUTDOWN UPDATE: We’ve been recalling inspectors to perform critical, high risk food safety inspections. We’ve been asked how many dedicated colleagues are currently working on these unpaid assignments. More people are on the way. Here’s a current snapshot of our field resources:
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
In addition, at #FDA’s Office of Import and Enforcement Operations, which cover International Mail Facilities and ports of entry, we have about 450 FDA staff in the field - including investigators, compliance experts and supervisors - supporting these critical safety operations
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
So far we’ve called back about 100 investigators and 35 supervisors to conduct and support domestic food surveillance inspections of high risk products. These professionals are in addition to FDA staff who were already working high-risk inspections, like foreign food assignments.

@SGottliebFDA
More staff could be on the way depending on needs. This is a snapshot of some of our current inspection work on high-risk assignments. Taken together, it's smaller than our usual footprint. But we’re targeting the riskiest products to make sure that Americans remain protected.

@SarahSorscherDC For Office of Import and Enforcement Operations we have about 450 out of 750. For Office of Human and Animal Food Operations I need to tally it this week but over 200 investigators (not counting support staff, supervisory, etc) out of about 550. Rough numbers and they fluctuate.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
@SarahSorscherDC We'll get some updates out soon. As you know, they need to be scheduled, so the number will grow over a period of a few weeks until we get to some kind of a steady state.

We're deeply grateful for the #FDA professional staff that continue to carry on this mission unpaid, while also incurring expenses on their personal government credit cards for travel. We're doing everything we can to support them as they protect American consumers.
