THREAD: Since release of the sunscreen proposed rule, some people have been asking, “Does this mean FDA is proposing to take all but 2 sunscreen ingredients off the US market?” For the vast majority of currently marketed sunscreens, the answer is no. Here’s some clarification: https://t.co/3RklK2jjim
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
For the 12 sunscreen ingredients that need more data, during the 90-day comment period for the proposed rule, manufacturers can ask for deferrals for specific ingredients and we expect some manufacturers will ask for deferrals on these specific ingredients, giving them more time.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
FDA has proposed 2 of 16 monograph ingredients to be generally recognized as safe effective (GRASE) for use in sunscreen and proposed 2 as not GRASE for use in sunscreen; for the other 12 ingredients we need more data: https://t.co/xqC480FUss
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
But if a sunscreen ingredient is granted a deferral, #FDA anticipates that products containing the ingredient will remain on the market while the data is gathered for that ingredient https://t.co/30fUVQ6Gf5 We can finalize the rule while these studies are still ongoing.
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
We plan to finalize the sunscreen proposed rule for the non-deferred ingredients and the other aspects of the rule. Once we receive data on a deferred ingredient and have a chance to consider such data, we intend to issue a final rule with our determination for that ingredient
SteveFDA (R-D.C.)
@SGottliebFDA
For an ingredient to be granted a deferral, we expect manufacturers would commit to providing data to cover the gaps for that ingredient as identified in the rule and to submit the data within a specified time period. https://t.co/IfUnVWmWjC

FDA is committed to working with industry and stakeholders to help ensure that sunscreens are safe and effective for daily, life-long use. As the rulemaking proceeds, OTC sunscreen products will continue to be available on the market for consumer use https://t.co/30fUVQ6Gf5

Message is clear: e-cigs may be a good alternative for currently addicted adult smokers to FULLY transition off cigarettes, but they have risks. Research suggests they can damage mucosa, including evidence we’ve seen at FDA. No child should be using them. https://t.co/1aqCmog89C

I’m coming up on @SquawkCNBC to discuss #FDA’s continuing steps to prevent illegal tobacco sales to minors; among other things, by targeting corporate store chains with a history of significant repeat violations and not just individual stores. https://t.co/Hd1IgnPIww
