…and introduced the Pre-Cert concept, a potential regulatory program for mobile apps and medical devices connected digitally to medical tech, that's better suited to these technologies that receive continuous software updates. We’re currently piloting it https://t.co/eRLMnOx2jI.

This information was always available but was only accessible by paper - our goal is to transfer the data into an electronic format where it can be more readily available.

I’m concerned about media reports mischaracterizing FDA’s device reporting programs. We’ve never kept alternative summary reports (ASRs) in a *secret* database; these have always been public records available upon request. We’re working to make data accessible electronically

@TheJusticeDept We've also worked to halt the illegal sale of unapproved kratom-containing drug products that have unproven claims about treating opioid addiction/withdrawal https://t.co/vBI5ttie16. Kratom is an opioid analogue that may contribute to the epidemic and puts patients at risk.

So last year #FDA launched “The Real Cost” E-cigarette Prevention Campaign, a campaign designed to snap teens out of their “cost-free” mentality by educating them about the potential risks of these products, urging them to “know the real cost of vaping.” We'll soon launch TV ads https://t.co/qOreW9V5Xl

But we’ve been rethinking our strategy amid new data showing an epidemic-level rise in youth e-cig use. The 2018 National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) found that over 3.6 million middle & high school students currently used e-cigs, from 2.1 million in 2017 https://t.co/pNI4PP0GiE

#FDA is committed to reducing death and disease from tobacco, and ending youth use, until my last day at the agency - and then for all the decades thereafter. We have no more impactful tool to reduce mortality than our tool of tobacco product regulation. https://t.co/S8LTHTfObH

My message is clear: e-cigs may be a good alternative for currently addicted adult smokers to FULLY transition off cigarettes, but they have risks. Research suggests they damage mucosa, including evidence we’ve seen at FDA. No child should be using them. https://t.co/1aqCmog89C

But if a sunscreen ingredient is granted a deferral, FDA anticipates that products containing the ingredient will remain on the market while the data is gathered for that ingredient https://t.co/30fUVQ6Gf5 We can finalize the rule while these studies are still ongoing. ...

So far, we’ve called back about 100 investigators and 35 supervisors to conduct and support high-risk domestic food safety surveillance inspections. These professionals are in addition to FDA staff who were already working high-risk jobs, like foreign inspectional assignments.

To address patient hardships created by the Byzantine if not predatory pricing practices the author describes; #FDA outlined a framework to open these products up to Biosimilar competition, making low cost copies easier to develop https://t.co/PlrVRMX6TA https://t.co/BQiIi6VF7M

Our data continues to demonstrate that flavors are a leading factor in driving youth appeal and use of e-cigs. This use has reached epidemic levels. It should be a concern to all responsible parties, including adults who responsible benefit from availability of these products.
