Merck
Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., agreed to pay more than $650 million to resolve allegations that it didn't pay proper rebates to government health programs and illegally paid health care providers as inducements to prescribe the company's products. In 2011, the company also agreed to pay $950 million to settle criminal charges and civil allegations stemming from its promotion and marketing of the painkiller Vioxx.
Merck’s 2012 report was expanded to include speaking, consulting, travel, meals, research, studies and educational items for doctors. But Merck no longer includes the number of events or speaker topics, and it combines expenditures for travel, meals and royalties into one category.
Merck's 2013 U.S. sales: $16.2 billion (includes both Merck and subsidiary Schering Plough). Source: IMS Health.
