Valeant
Valeant, based in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, has purchased several companies in recent years, including Biovail Corp., Afexa Life Sciences, Inc., and Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. makes a range of neurology and dermatology drugs as well as a host of branded generics. In September 2009, Biovail agreed to pay $24.6 millionto settle a lawsuit alleging illegal kickbacks. A Biovail subsidiary pleaded guilty to conspiracy and kickback criminal charges.
Valeant began reporting payments for consulting, speaking, meals, travel, expense reimbursement and educational items as of January 2010. For the first two years, Valeant reported the information in separate quarterly reports that were not combined. It did not report data for the fourth quarter of 2010 because of its merger with BioVail Corp., which closed in September 2010.
Beginning in the fourth quarter of 2011, Valeant switched from reporting specific dollar amounts to reporting payments in ranges, i.e. $0-$100. Its 2012 report groups all payments made during the year into a single report.
