In the study “Electrical impedance myography in an animal model” Dr. Rutkove intends to expand on previous studies conducted on electrical impedance myopathy (EIM). The hypothesis of the project is that surface changes in electrical impedance myopathy data reflect the inherent electrical material properties of muscle, and that these properties are directly impacted by muscle pathology. The project will examine EIM data in mouse models with ALS, SMA and Duchenne muscular dystrophy.The Company designs impedance devices for clinical and research use. The Company’s economic success is in part dependent upon proof that generally electrical impedance technology is effective in a clinical and research setting. If the study finds that the electrical impedance myopathy data does not reflect the inherent electrical material properties of muscle or muscle pathology, the value of the Company’s business interests may decrease significantly.
Dr. Rutkove owns equity and receives compensation in excess of the de minimis from the Company. The value of that stock could fluctuate based upon the publication of the results of this study. A reasonable person could perceive that Dr. Rutkove has a conflict of interest in the design, conduct, and reporting of the study.
Electrical impedance myography in an animal model
Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a new, non-invasive tool for the evaluation of muscle that can serve as an effective method for neuromuscular disease assessment. This study will evaluate EIM changes in several animal models of neuromuscular disease, with the goal of improving our ability to measure and interpret EIM data. With the completion of this work, it will be possible to utilize EIM more effectively in both pre-clinical animal studies and human clinical trials, in order to help speed the search and discovery of effective therapies for a variety of neuromuscular diseases, ranging from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis to muscular dystrophy.
