Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Dr. Savova helped create and continues to develop a Clinical Text Analysis and Knowledge Extraction System (cTAKES; ctakes.apache.org), which was released under an open-sourced license – Apache 2.0. Wired Informatics is envisioned to provide services and products for clinical Natural Language Processing applications using the open source Apache cTAKES among other tools.), which was released under an open-sourced license. The purpose of the subject NIH funded research is to create novel technologies for processing clinical free text in the context of temporal relation discovery. The outcome of the research may improve the methods for processing clinical free text, which has the potential to indirectly benefit the Company. In this Study we are investigating computational methods for creating timelines from the Electronic Medical Records. The best performing methods will be released as modules in the open-source Apache cTAKES. This grant may be related to Wired Informatics because after the open-source release of the methods in Apache cTAKES, Wired Informatics might choose to include the temporal module in its products. Of note, Apache cTAKES is distributed under the liberal Apache 2.0 license and any interested party (academic, industry, government, not-for-profit, individual) is allowed to use it in research/products, therefore there is no exclusivity of use to Wired Informatics.

Temporal relation discovery for clinical text

Project Narrative Temporal relations are of prime importance in biomedicine as they are intrinsically linked to diseases, signs and symptoms, and treatments. Understanding the timeline of clinically relevant events is key to the next generation of translational research where the importance of generalizing over large amounts of data holds the promise of deciphering biomedical puzzles. The goal of our current proposal is to automatically discover temporal relations from clinical free text and structured EHR data and create an aggregated patient-level timeline.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
