Conflict of Interest

Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Disclosed Conflict of Interest with

AnTolRx,Inc

Disclosed Value
Listed Reason
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)

The research project studies the AHR/IFNAR1 pathways and their potential therapeutic role for chronic central nervous system inflammation and progressive multiple sclerosis. The company, AnTolRx, Inc., uses AHR to induce immune tolerance and has an MS treatment in its development pipeline. Given the investigator’s private equity interest and cash compensation, it was determined that the research is related to the interest and that the interest could affect the design, conduct, or reporting of the research projects, resulting in a financial conflict of interest under the PHS regulations.

Listed Research Project
The role of the IFNAR1/AhR signaling axis in astrocyte regulation and remediation of multiple sclerosis pathogenesis

Astrocytes play important roles in health and disease but their role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) as well as targets for their therapeutic modulation are still largely unknown. We found that signaling via the type I interferon receptor 1 (IFNAR1) and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) controls astrocyte functions relevant to MS pathology. In this project I propose to define the role of IFNAR1/AhR signaling in the control of astrocyte function during the progressive phase of MS and evaluate its potential as a therapeutic target.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.

Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.

ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
