Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Darwin Health
Equity Interest - Non-publicly traded entity ( e.g., stock, stock option, or other ownership interest)
Dr. Califano's anticipated equity interest in Darwin Health was originally reported as a managed FCOI in connection with this grant in FCOI Report 10941. As noted therein, Dr. Califano is co-founder of a startup company called Darwin Health. Columbia has determined that the company’s aims (commercialization of efforts for systematic identification of aberrantly activated gene products within critical tumor checkpoints that drive cancer initiation, progression, and drug resistance) are related to research described in this award; that the outcome of this research could affect the company or Dr. Califano’s significant financial interest in the company; and that the design, conduct, and/or reporting of research under this award could be affected by this financial interest.
Columbia now is reporting additional new financial interests for Dr. Califano in Darwin, which have been reviewed and incorporated into the existing management plan. Columbia had originally submitted a new FCOI Report on 5/21/18 (#14134) reporting these new financial interests. For administrative purposes (and after discussion with Kathy Hancock, OPERA Grants Compliance on 5/21/18), the following steps are being taken: (1) FCOI Report 14134 has been rescinded, (2) Columbia is reporting the FCOI described in FCOI Report 10941 as no longer existing, and (3) Columbia is consolidating the reporting of all of Dr. Califano’s Darwin financial interests and the FCOI management for this award into this new FCOI report #14138.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
