Conflict of Interest
Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

Darwin Health
Other : Board of directors
Dr. Califano's anticipated equity interest in Darwin Health was originally reported as a managed FCOI in connection with this grant in FCOI Report 12872. This new FCOI Report lists additional new financial interests for Dr. Califano in the company. As noted in FCOI Report 12872, Dr. Califano is co-founder of a startup company called Darwin Health. Columbia has determined that the company’s aims (commercialization of efforts for systematic identification of aberrantly activated gene products within critical tumor checkpoints that drive cancer initiation, progression, and drug resistance) are related to research described in this award; that the outcome of this research could affect the company or Dr. Califano’s significant financial interests in the company; and that the design, conduct, and/or reporting of this research could be affected by this financial interest.
Systematic Identification and Pharmacological Targeting of Tumor Dependencies for Precision Cancer Medicine
PROJECT NARRATIVE Genetically-based targeted therapy and immunoncology hold great promise but patients eventually relapse with drug resistant tumors suggesting that one may need to revisit the concept of therapeutic targets as single proteins. To accomplish this goal, we will leverage a highly successful framework developed by us for the identification, validation, and pharmacological targeting of tumor dependencies implemented by master regulator (MR) proteins in tumor checkpoint modules. This would represent the first mechanistic approach for precision cancer medicine, where therapeutic targets, associated small molecule inhibitors, and population stratification biomarkers are derived from precise, mechanistic understanding of tumor state regulation and of its drug-induced modulation.

Notes: When a more specific filing date is not available for an individual financial disclosure or conflict of interest form, we use the year the form was filed. If the year was not disclosed, we report the range of years covered by our public records requests. In a few cases, a start date was provided instead of a filing date. In those cases, we use the start date instead.
Fewer than 10% of records from the University of Florida and fewer than 1% of records from the University of Texas system were removed because they did not contain enough information.
ProPublica obtained additional financial disclosures and conflict of interest forms that we have not yet digitized and added to the database. You can download those disclosures in the ProPublica Data Store.
