Institutions must file significant disclosures to the National Institutes of Health if they determine financial relationships could affect the design, conduct or reporting of the NIH-funded research. The NIH provided us with their entire financial conflict of interest database, with filings from 2012 through 2019.

The SFI that results from the intellectual property rights is related in that its value could be affected by the research. The SFI that results from the equity interest in a non-publicly traded entity is related in that its value could be affected by the research. The SFI that results from the fiduciary role is related in that it is in an entity whose financial interest could be affected by the research. Upon review by the institution, it was determined that Dr. Della Santina’s SFIs could directly and significantly affect the design, conduct or reporting of his research under this award.
Physiology of Vestibular Compensation
After complete loss of vestibular (inner ear balance) sensation on one or both sides, most patients ultimately recover enough to do well, but some fail to compensate and remain disabled by chronic imbalance and inability to see clearly while moving. This research project will define neural mechanisms that underlie how the brain compensates after vestibular injury and advance development of an implantable bionic inner ear device that can replace lost vestibular sensation.
